Swedish band Niva was a new band to me, but then upon further investigation, it all came back to me, a melodic rush and a revelation of sorts. The clue? Escape Music's 2012 signing Oxygen, which was in fact Niva wearing a mask and a disguise. That disguise was undone by the beautiful voice of singer Tony Niva. Honestly, this guy is amazing, containing one of the primo voices in all of Scandi melodic rock, if not the best! Some claim indeed by the GDM editor, who has seen and heard it all over the years. But I have no hesitation in making such a declaration. I vaguely mentioned it in my Oxygen review, but this is confirmed in spades upon hearing 'Magnitude'. If a cross between Grand Illusion's Peter Sundell and TNT's Tony Harnell is your bag, then Tony Niva is your man. Period!

The Songs
The songs here are just a killer selection of prime AOR. Where do I start.. really? The first three songs are simply spellbinding. Swedish AOR of the finest sort. 'Never Too Late', 'Perfect Life' and 'My First And Only One' just blew me away. It continues on with astonishing memorability. 'Just Another Heartache' continues the assault, and by now I'm heading to the fridge looking for some 4.5% alcohol laden relief. 'In A Misty Light' chills things down appreciably, a lighter-in-the-air ballad, but after a few minutes breather, it's all on again. 'Always Somewhere' and 'Let It Shine' are majestic slices of AOR. Don't be fooled thinking 'Spanish Lullaby' is a laid back ballad with flamenco guitar. No way Jose! The melodic rock quotient is retained throughout. 'Do It Again' moves into a faster tempo, and it's a solid affair with chugging riffs and those oh so amazing vocals from Mr Niva. There's no respite on 'Never Say Goodbye', which rumbles along with melodic intent as only Niva (the band) can deliver. The final track 'Feel So Alone' is a power ballad in the vein of Grand Illusion, an endorsement if ever there was one.

In Summary
I can't understand why I was late to this album. If I had the chance to re-sort my 2013 Best Of list, then this would be somewhere up the top. I'm glad I got around to addressing this album, it really is a mighty effort. If radio friendly Scandi melodic hard rock styled in the late 80's era is something you're keen on (think TNT's 'Tell No Tales'), Then Niva should be sought out as soon as possible. Niva decided to do something different for the Japanese market, naming the album 'Gravitation' with an extra track bolted on called 'Love Online'. Regardless, a super album, an awesome voice, and a complete mind-blowing AOR experience. Buy or die!!
