An album like this can only be from Sweden. Right? Yes, damn right! It's scandi melodic hard rock bordering on metal, and with a line-up that's pretty impressive for a debut effort. Joachim Nordlund and Johan Lindstedt formed SunStrike back in 2012. Both those guys came from Dio copy-cats Astral Doors. Singer Christian Hedgren has sung with Twilight Force and more recently on the 2013 debut from The Theander Expression. Added to this, keyboardist Fredrik Plahn comes from another Swedish melodic rock ouftit: Prey. Completing the picture are second guitarist Mats Gesar who came from Thalamus and bassist Björn Lundqvist, also from Twilight Force. All those bands (apart from Twilight Force and Thalamus), are reviewed here at GDM. Admittedly, there is nothing earthshaking original with SunStrike, but what they do, they do well, and convincingly so. They slot into the territory occupied by other Swedish faves H.E.A.T, Eclipse, W.E.T and Dynazty. In fact, with Dynazty moving into even heavier realms on their latest album 'Renatus', SunStrike have more or less taken their place!

The Songs
Twelve tracks grace the album, and there's no let up from beginning to end. No ballads either! 'Rock Your World' is strong on choruses, a two-pronged guitar attack and walls of keyboards. I can't quite list any sure-fire favourites, as the songs are all superb, however if someone was ready to put me to torture, then 'Fireball', 'Rock It Out' and the hard-driving 'Heat Of The Night' would tip the odds. This is an album where you can easily listen to this over and over. None of the songs outstay their welcome. All hover between the three and four minute mark, keeping it short, sharp and snappy.

In Summary
The melodic rock world is blessed with a ton of great bands at the moment. Some of the newer ones now coming to light during 2014 are really really good. You can add SunStrike to that list. You know, in this genre, the book of heavy rock does not need to be rewritten. Sometime more of the same can be good. I guess that's why many of us have been fans for thirty years or more. With new bands like SunStrike appearing on the scene, long may that continue to happen.
