Background
Much has been written and said about Anette Olzon's departure from Finnish supergroup Nightwish. That was a few years ago, and written into a past chapter, says the Swedish singer. She'll want us to focus on the future, and in early 2014, that means her first solo CD 'Shine'. Some of these songs have been in the can since 2009, while still in Nightwish, but it's only recently thta she's finally ruled a line through a very personal set of songs which grace the CD.

The Songs
The album opens with the mid-tempo 'Like A Show Inside My Head'. It has a strong orchestral base, but I think another track should've been used to open the album. Next up is title track 'Shine' is certainly the edgiest track here. Guitars that snarl like a power-line in the wind, and an arrangement that could fit on any number of the Frontiers Records roster. There are strains of Kate Bush on the quirky 'Floating', or the Evanescence sounding 'Lies', which is quite beautiful actually. The album is consistent tempo wise, and quite lush musically. Listening to 'Invincible' was like sitting back and getting lost in an Iona album! The whole thing has a Dare meets Iona vibe throughout, and as most of you will probably know, they are my two favourite bands in that AOR/ambient genre. At this point, I'm listening to this and enjoying it immensely. 'Hear Me' features an interesting change-up moment mid-stream, rocking up a surprising twist. The jangly 'Falling' is a lush ballad played in the style of Nightwish but even more melodic. So too the incredible mellow meldoies of 'Moving Away'. It's easy to be drawn into the reverie. 'One Million Faces' is an exquisite piano ballad while my pick for the best listen comes at the end: 'Watching Me From Afar', complete with a faint regimented drum that drives this track with a near tribal rhythmic back-beat. The accordion solo gives this a maritime feel.

In Summary
For once I'm ok listening to an album that doesn't vary greatly in tempo. Many other reviews suggest 'Shine' isn't that challenging musically, but I'll counter that by saying the quality of Anette's vocals are superb, and the songs are personal and compelling. If you love Nightwish, then go in search of this CD. While you're at it, track down Tarja Turunen's latest solo CD 'Colours In The Dark' (also on the EarMusic label) as well. Two for the price of.. two!

I'll be giving this more listening time in the next wee while. Opinions range right across the Net, in particular the production isn't as good as it could've been. They might have a point there.
