Seventrain are a newish San Diego band that has membership scattered from various 'name' bands from the area, plus further afield. Guitarist Eric Horton was previously with Cage, Jef Poremba was with 6ONE9 and Kofi Baker's band (son of Ginger Baker), while singer Jon Campos came from local bands Tourniquet and Dive Bomber. Bassist Greg Rupp played bass on the CD but left soon after to be replaced by Steve Andino, also of Tourniquet. The key component of Seventrain is drummer and producer Joel Maitoza, who previously played with major label band 247-Spyz, a New York outfit who were prominent in the early 90's, playing funk metal in the style of Living Colour. Seventrain have a cool rockin' sound, that fuses metal and blues in the vein of Badlands, Tesla and Black Label Society. They also chuck in a few tasty acoustic based ballads which are very nice.

The Songs
Looking at the track titles, this has all the hallmarks of a post grunge sounding band, but nothing could be further from the truth. The sound is heavy but clean, and I like the way they keep it consistent, and when they drop a few rungs on the metronome, their ballads drop nicely into acoustic mode, for example 'Pain' and 'Let It Out' which are smooth as whiskey and honey. 'How Does It Feel' is quite a beautiful melodic track which only heavies up in the last segment. I like the southern cowpoke vibe of 'Bittersweet Seduction'. Jon Bon Jovi eat your heart out! 'Broken' also has a nice western/southern backdrop, the acoustic guitar melodies warming up the heavy electrics to follow. For the most part, Seventrain keep it strong and loud. Tracks like 'Bleeding', the wickedly heavy 'Change' which churns out riffs that Zakk Wylde would be proud of, so too the very leaden 'Carry The Cross', or the phase-shifting excess of 'Never', with a hint of Stryper on the chorus. All worthy tracks indeed.

In Summary
There is a video made for 'Bittersweet Seduction', you can see it below. Maitoza and engineer Don Lithgow tracked the album using analog technology, mixing it down to 2 inch tape. Sometimes old school is just better! In a recent interview with Maitoza, he mentioned that Seventrain was going to support Michael Schenker, Skid Row and Black Star Riders during 2014, and work will commence on a second album for 2015. A busy year ahead then.
