Agreed Reyno about Clyde Best, further back is the story of Walter Tull which is quite heartbreaking, links to Northampton and lived in Rushden.

Big loss is Cyrille, only short time at Wolves, but I was at the Peterborough game where he scored the last minute winner, Cyrille and Laurie C, what a team.

I think many people forget guys like West Ham's Clyde Best whenever the subject of the impact of black footballers in the English game crops up. He was just as good as the West Brom trio years b4

Cyrille was part of the ground breaking so called 'three degrees' who did so much to break down racial barriers in Football back in the late 70's.R.I.P

Background
Here's an English band signed to the Sky Rocket label, which we've been doing a little work over the last few months. Nightblade are a old school metal band with a hint of speed/thrash, but more so doses of a plethora of 80's bands most of which feature here at GDM. From Birmingham, it would be easy to compare them to earlier generation heroes such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, and it's appropriate that these veterans originate from that same era too. Factor in some Iron Maiden like horse galloping and some Motorhead like rev-head riffs, and you've probably got Nightblade's modus operandi down hat.

The Songs
It's all pedals to the metal as 'Over My Body' kicks in as the opening salvo. It's a fusion of at least 3 of the 4 bands mentioned previously, and is an impressive NWOBHM styled workout. The title track 'Closer To The Threshold' is a hard chugga that sounds closer to the 1983 than it does 2013. The Sabbath influenced intro provides a doom metal entrance which soon makes way for some solid fast paced metal, in an early American style it must be said. The speed is on as far as 'It's All About You' is concerned. Not quite in Raven's league but you get the picture. 'Out Of Commission' put the brakes on things, the vocals sung in a lower register at first. It's a long song (5 minutes) and goes through a few changes. My favourite track is the superb 'Your Soul, Right Of Way', which veers toward melodic metal a la Gaskin, another British band we featured here about a year ago. 'Shadow Of Doubt' picks up the pace again, the comparison to 80's British contenders provides further evidence which is hard to ignore. 'Tongue Tied And Broken' and 'On Blackened Days' take Nightblade to the end with typically 80's metal, raw and unpretentious.

In Summary
There's enough to suggest that the band know how to crank up the power when needed. Their songs are pretty reasonable, and all within a set of metal genre's that are an easy sell at GDM. The album has been out for some time (mid 2013), so it's not exactly new as such, but worth a listen if good old fashioned Brit metal is your bag. At the time of writing, Nightblade are out on tour in the UK alongside Superfecta, another band recently featured at GDM.
