In the world of hard rock and heavy metal locales, Sheffield wasn't just the home of world beaters Def Leppard. In the early days of NWOBHM, another outfit called Geddes Axe originated from the Steel City, and try as they might, it just wasn't to be in terms of success and global glory. Named after a post World War I piece of legislation to curb spending within the British Parliament, there were no gory pieces of hardware involved with this lot as you might expect with axes and axe handles, just some long forgotten piece of paper. These boys released a handful of EP's during their name, but not enough to get them signed to a major label. Sounds Magazine were major fans of the band, judging by the exposure given to them during the NWOBHM era, and their efforts drew praise at the time.

The Songs
The band released three EP's (two of which were demos) during their time. 'Sharpen Your Wits' was the middle effort, only a two-tracker, but it's a corker, somewhere between early Iron Maiden and Def Leppard. 'Sharpen Your Wits' (the track) is a fast paced typical NWOBHM riffster, the guitar lines stolen from early Leppard material. Talking of guitarists, Nick Brown had joined the band as a replacement for Andy Barrot who had departed or melodic rockers Baby Tuckoo. Singer and new boy Tony Rose settles in nicely, while Burke's drum work is fast and solid throughout. The second track 'Rock And Roll Is The Way' sounds like early Metallica but without the total thrash element associated with that lot.

In Summary
A pretty reasonable effort, Geddes Axe would release the 'Escape From New York' EP for Bullet Records in 1983, but that would be the extent of their discography, as members would leave and go onto other projects.
