2013 was a very good year for progressive metal. It caught my attention for most of the 12 months, and though we didn't get around to all the releases on offer, we'll eventually get to a few of them, even if we are several months beyond their release dates. One band to get a late call-up off the bench were young German outfit Victorious. Bold name, bold imagery and especially bold music. This lot are fast and furious, and pick their references from a whole slew of contemporaries.. too many to name here. Victorius were picked up by SPV/Steamhammer during the year, but at the time this album was released, they were still unsigned. Well, where we do start? If chest-beating power metal is your game, then this lot should grab your attention. 'The Awakening' is full of war-cry anthems, battle hardened double bass drums, sledgehammer guitars and a singer in David Baßin who can scream with the best of them.

The Songs
Surely the song-titles are a giveaway to the Victorious delivery method, which is primarily built on speed, and then more speed. Don't get me wrong, this is not thrash, these Germans compete with the likes of Dragonforce and Helloween quite well, but their approach to heaviness is slightly different. Tracks like 'Starfire', 'Black Sun', 'Kings Reborn' and the rather excellent 'Metalheart' challenge the metronome to no end. A number of songs such as 'The Awakening', 'Under Burning Skies', 'Through The Deadlands' and 'Call For Resistance' change the pace somewhat, from speedy to not so speedy.

In Summary
Admittedly it was difficult to get into the mood for this record, it left me breathless for a majority of the time. Noted melodic rock editor Johnny Forslund named this album as one of his favourites of 2013. I myself wouldn't go that far, the band band do have potential though. I'm certain that Victorious can add a bit of finesse to their brand of OTT power metal. Sometimes too much can be overkill, so maybe the band can learn to slacken off when required. A band to watch, now that they are on a big label, they can be a selective in their future material.
