Slow week for me, it's been all horse racing in Australia this week, with the Melbourne Cup meeting over four days. Back to GDM on the weekend.

Bay Rum - 1985 4 x 4

LABEL: South Bay Records
SERIAL: -

LINEUP: Frank Silveira - lead vocals * Dan Vash - lead guitar * Rich Stewart - guitars * Jeff Vash - keyboard & vocals * Todd Clark - bass * John Warmouth - drums

Background
Bay Rum were a California outfit who played right through the 70's and 80's. I'm led to believe that the band even play to this current day, though that needs to be verified. This is fantastic late 70's rock with a southern rock edge, plus a European hard rock slant, no doubt due to the organ work which lends itself quite nicely to bands like Lucifers Friend and Uriah Heep. Formed by the Vash brothers, these guys originated from Livermore, east of San Francisco, and were formed typically during high school. Bay Rum went through two major phases of their life. That is: life before this record '4x4' and thereafter, with significant line-up changes.

The Songs
The EP was produced by Will Mullins, based in his South Bay Montage Studios in Newark CA, Will also mentored the band. Bay Rum went into the studio at the tail end of 1984, and released '4x4' the following year. With only four tracks to deal with, its' easy to make our way through this EP in double quick time.

The opener '4 Wheel Drive' might hint at the BTO side of hard rock, but this lot show surprising dexterity. The guitars are coarse and raw/riff ready. Singer Frank Silveira angles in on a Steve Tyler type vocal rap a la 'Walk This Way', but really, this track has a bit of everything. Even the keyboard solo will have pompsters eager to listen to more!

I'm loving the top-tappin' piano work on 'Alone With Her', this one is great, and the annoying resemblance to Joe Jackson's 'Is She Really Going Out With Him' was passable only because the rest of the song is pretty good.

'Heart Attack' after a slow start, gets going in no uncertain fashion. The band give it their best and drives this track through at a good clip. Some good musicianship here.

The last of the four tracks is 'Come On', a fervent rocker with a boatload of organ and big harmony vocals. A bit harder to describe this one, I'll let you decide.

In Summary
This version of the band stayed intact for at least another year, until guitarist Danny Vash left the band. By 1987, the band had completely changed personnel with only Jeff Vash and Rich Stewart. Bay Rum reformed with a new line up for 1987's 3-track cassette only release 'Only The Strong Survive', but beyond that no other recorded material. Jeff Vash has kept the spirit of the band alive over many decades, and it would appear Bay Rum is alive and well, according to Jeff's account on YouTube.

After seeing this a variety of times over the past few years, I finally pulled the trigger. 'Alone With Her' gets the best track nod with its catchy chorus. 'Heart Attack' is a close second and also really liked the organ sounds in 'Come On'. Bay Rum is an enjoyable four song jaunt.
