OK, all the YouTube videos are working again. Just use the YT link, and then encase in tags [ youtube] at the start, [/ youtube] at the end. Cool. Thumbs Up

Slow week for me, it's been all horse racing in Australia this week, with the Melbourne Cup meeting over four days. Back to GDM on the weekend.

Background
Anneke is best known the singer who propelled the career of the legendary dark-metal-turned-trip-rock band The Gathering, and earned her rightful place in the hearts of metalheads worldwide, as well as the hearts of prog fans worldwide due to her collaborations with prog luminaries Arjen Lucassen and Devin Townsend (and, depends on whether you'd put Anathema under the prog umbrella or not, Danny Cavanagh). The latest of the four studio albums she put out under her own name, however, is turning as much heads as collaborations with these legendary names, and for a good reason, it's a slab of almost no-filler badass melodic rock.

The Songs
The album starts off with 'We Live On', a wonderful, anthemic track with a huge chorus (memorize that, almost every chorus on this album is huge) that somehow reminds me of the work she's done with Devin Townsend on his album Addicted. 'Treat Me Like A Lady' and 'Drive' show Anneke's gritty side, especially lyrically, while remaining positive and upbeat musically, and in between them is nested 'She', an unusual number with a rather non-ceremonious beginning that builds its way up to greatness. Of course, there isn't an Anneke album without a heartfelt piano ballad, and it comes in the shape of 'My Mother Said'. The second half of the album is even stronger, with 'Forgive Me' and 'Mental Jungle' providing some necessary weirdness, the first with its unexpected chord progressions and vocal melodies and the second one slightly leans towards the music from the Eastern perspective (never the one to half-ass things, Anneke brought a Turkish singer to further add to the authentic atmosphere). 'You Will Never Change' is one of my favourites, a perfect, punchy pop rock tune ideal to dedicate to that one person in your life who just won't get it. 'Shooting Stars' is somewhat forgettable, but the album still ends on a strong note with 'The Best Is Yet To Come', a lovely track both about and inspiring personal resistance and optimism.

In Summary
If you're in the mood for something rather accessible but non-repetitive, this lady's got you covered. Play it, enjoy it, love it.

A nice disc. Her work with Devin Townsend Project last year was a highlight, especially 'True North'.
