I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

Most people on here know my love for all things Southern Rock, so I thought I should review some of the big names of this style. So who shall it be, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet? Having recently bought Blackberry Smoke's latest 'The Whippoorwill' which has not left the CD player, I thought what better CD to review. 'The Whippoorwill' is their third studio album, and the first for Zac Brown's independent label Southern Ground. Blackberry Smoke have gained full recognition of their ability on every song from start to finish from the lyrics to the melody to the production. Blackberry Their bio says that they mix 'elements of gospel, bluegrass, arena rock, soul, and more than a touch of country'. These influences are evident on this thirteen-track album.

The Songs
The album kicks off with the rocking 'Six Ways To Sunday' which instantly reminds the listener of classic Lynyrd Skynyrd. It has some great piano playing from Brandon Still. 'Pretty Little Lie' is about a relationship that has one too many people involved in it. 'Everybody Knows She's Mine' has a really good guitar and piano solo intertwined. And the girl backing singers add a nice harmonious touch to the song. Both these songs fuse country and rock together. 'One Horse Town' follows on. Not quite John Mellencamp. Some fantastic lyrics about life in a small town. 'Ain't Much Left Of Me,' has the big rock sound that just lifts you off your feet, this is pure Southern pride. The title track is up next 'The Whippoorwill', musically and vocally, this is the one of the best track on the album with its slow, seductive groove along with Charlie Starr's vocals that allows the listener to connect with the song, which is a tribute to his grandmother. 'Leave A Scar' is a shit kicker of a song, with some really enjoyable banjo playing. There is only one way to listen to this song and that's loud. 'Sleeping Dogs' has a really cool vibe to it and I love the line 'Make no mistake let there be no doubt. Paint me in a corner; I'll fight my way out. The moral of the story brother, this is it. I'll be all over you like stink on shit!' 'Shakin' Hands With The Holy Ghost' reminds me of AC/DC riffs, and some really good guitar work midway through the song. Closing this CD is 'Up The Road', a ballad that reminds me of bluesman Joe Cocker or even Harry Nilsson.

In Summary
This CD has not left my CD Player for the last 6 weeks. Blackberry Smoke has honed their skills over the last decade and it finally shows on this disk. Each member complements each others style and playing. The production is near perfect. Overall this is a very enjoyable CD, one that should take Blackberry Smoke up another notch and into the big league.
