Background
Hooker, a person or group that provides a unique service for profit or gain. Name of Texas rock band circa 1972-1983. No dramatic or hidden references, no subliminal attachments or meanings. Just a cool name for a band. That's who we are... Hooker! The band had been around in various configurations since 1972, but when David Howland and Robbie Hodge started jamming with Randy Meers things really began to move. Hailing from Houston, Texas they were a regular at Cardis and released, to the best of my knowledge this one album, titled 'Rock N Roll'.

The Songs
Straight of the bat comes 'I'm Lookin' and within 60 seconds of the song starting we have some of the heaviest dueling guitars I have heard. This song is just insane. 'The Way You Love Me' offers more of the dueling guitars and 'Bad Rib' follows on from this insanity but slows the pace down with more of a blues feel to it. The more I am hearing this the more it reminds me of early Triumph. 'Downhearted' has some great lead guitar work, which suddenly interchanges nicely with the chorus. 'Mr. Sister' is next with its quirky lyrics. I wonder which one of the band members had the unfortunate encounter with this lady. 'Beatle' is next, this has such a dramatic change midway through the song, it goes from haunting melody to just all out balls to the wall mayhem. 'When I Finally Get To Heaven' has a great Lynyrd Skynyrd feel to it along with some great vocal harmonies. 'Out Of Time' follows on, again another great song, with good vocals and crushing guitars. The next four tracks I believe are demos, which did not make the original album. 'High Energy Lover' is just what it says it is.

In Summary
BUY THIS CD. This CD is just off the scale for pure fast guitar laden rock. It is insane. It must have blown the people of Houston in to the middle of next week when it was released in the mid 70's. Sadly Hooker only released this one album, having succumbed to the Rock n Roll lifestyle of drink, drugs and sex. Unfortunately it caught up with guitarist Dave Howland, who experienced a severe reality check one night, which changed the course of the band. When Dave left they began touring as a 3 piece with Jim Dandy and had a women called Maxine Sands on vocals. Check out Rockadrome Records for more.

From what I understand, the material was recorded in three lots: 1975, 1976 and 1978. Don't know if it was officially released back then. I'll hazard a guess and say yes, could be a private pressing, or a very obscure label.

As soon as I read the review I downloaded the album on CDbaby and....wow, what a fantastic set of songs! This is IT, the way it should sound, great guitars. Just the kind of music that should appeal to anyone into 70's hardrock. Thanks for posting this review!
