Let's run the ruler down the list. She's from Finland.. check. She plays melodic rock.. check. She's blonde and cute.. check. Her singing coach is the awesome and gorgeous Sonja Lilja (from Nubian Rose).. check. She's a bit of a tomboy and likes/participates in action sports.. double check! And 'Renegade' is a great little album full of melodic surprises.. that's a sign off from me and a big tick at the bottom of the page! There's a heap to like about Jessica Wolff's debut album. So totally Finnish in style, comparing favourably to some of my favourite outfits from the land of a thousand lakes. Most of the songs are just perfect little sugar bullets of melodic pop/rock. Some of them have been written and released locally as far back as 2010. Jessica is so fortunate having Sonja Lilja as her vocal coach. It must be much the same as having F1 hero Lewis Hamilton as your driving instructor! Jessica's vocal floats between a combo of Belinda Carlisle, Erika and Shania Twain. An interesting mixture for sure, though not as definite as those individuals, but more of a melding of the three. Let's have a listen..

The Songs
It's a modern start for 'Dirty Kisses', a dark lip-sticked edgy rocker with a chorus guaranteed to hook you in. Talking about the choruses, all (and I mean ALL) the tracks here have strong choruses which to me is one of the key indicators of success to any album, and Jessica succeeds 100% here. Jess' vocal is on form with the superb 'Broken Wings', which is kind of a lament for the world's children. I love this tune! 'In Disguise' is much tougher, a hard driving chorus keeping this one on the razors edge. Subdued is the best description for 'Blind', I am reminded of Jennifer Paige's marvellous songs from the 2001 era, a super comparison. 'I Will Live On' has some interesting lyrics about what seems to be a loved one who has passed over, who still pervades the realm of the living through dreams and memories. 'Want You Out Of My Head' is another goregous tough pop rocker with a chorus to die for.. while 'Trophy Girl' is straight out of the nub-breed era. Think Mars Electric and their ilk.. you'll be at home here. 'Butterflies' is the token acoustic ballad, Jessica's attempt at doing a Jewel perhaps? Coupled with 'Blue' which is also similar though a tad more electric and again, Jennifer Paige is a good fit. Lovely song. Another album highlight is the ambient 'Ashes To Diamonds', which features trance like aspects early on, before rolling out to an intense and dramatic affair from mid-song onward. The Japanese edition of this album adds two extra tracks: 'Backstabber' and 'You Should Get Over Me'. The former is an Erika like dirty pop rocker, the latter also adds an extra layer of grease and grit for effect.

In Summary
Re-recorded and produced in Los Angeles, Jessica had to bear witness to her songs being given a total makeover from those earlier versions; songs that she had become accustomed to. No worry though, the sugar-candy treatment given to them by producer Jimmy Westerlund has wrapped up two years of songwriting and recording for Jessica. A two-pronged approach has been instigated to release 'Renegade' in her local Finnish market via the AXR label (a.k.a Audiovox Records), and also King Records in Japan (the Japanese version of the CD has those aforementioned two extra tracks). Jessica also travelled to Japan for a release party, and to promote it to an appreciative audience. No mucking about here, a great little CD, and we're only too glad to recommend it.

Really good album. Her vocals remind me of Agnetha from ABBA, whose new album incidentally, is also quite good.
