I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

Residing on the outskirts of Winchester, Virginia, and founded in 2009 come Southern Governor. This lot started primarily as a cover band, influenced by such Southern heavyweights, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Marshall Tucker Band, Georgia Satellites and the Atlanta Rhythm Section. However, the band shifted its style and saw more of a mainstream rock sound begin to take shape, with the likes of the Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana and 3 Doors Down thrown into the mix. 2012 marked a change in the band with dropping the three guitars and going to a two guitar bass and drums line up, and also brought about a turning point. They took most of the year writing and refining their true sound and identity while still occasionally getting out and playing in the area. In June 2012 the band started recording demos at their rehearsal space to send to Black Stone Cherry's front man Chris Robertson. Those demos would later be recorded at the Music Is Me Recording Studio in Glasgow, Kentucky. The studio is owned and operated by Black Stone Cherry members Ben Wells & Jon Lawhon, and fellow BSC members Ryan 'Jonesy' Gorman, & John 'Shep' Shepherd. Taking the producer role on the recording was Chris Robertson. The most fascinating thing I find with Southern Governor that sets them apart from other bands is their age. Three brothers and correct me if I'm wrong, two are still in their teens.

The Songs
Kicking off this CD is 'Crazy' with its pounding riff intro, and some fine guitar solo work. 'Nobody Else' and 'Gone' follow on. You can hear the Black Stone Cherry influence in Pat Galanis Jr vocals. 'Gone' has a very Black Sabbath feel to it, then injects into something Soundgarden could have recorded. 'American Pride' is next up, again with some first class guitar work. There seems to be a common theme with a lot of the new Southern influenced music coming out is to have at least one song about patriotism, but then Skynyrd were doing it way back in the 70s. 'Puttin In Time, Waitin' On Friday' is a super chunky effort by the boys, a great fist pumping party anthem with a good catchy chorus. Closing the CD is the tittle track 'Its My Time' co written by Chris Robertson.

In Summary
Overall this is an outstanding effort for a debut release by such a young band that shows a lot of promise. This CD has a lot to offer the listener on a lot of different levels. I can only describe this as a cross between Southern and Stoner rock. The heavy riffs that run though out this CD did remind me of Blue Cheer's 'Vincebus Eruptum'. I take my hat off to these young fellas for following their heart and producing a genre of music that is slowly disappearing and being replaced by manufactured dross. Hard rock music needs bands like these lads to carry the flag long after we've gone.
