Between his own gigs, organizing prog festivals and recording; British musician Tim Hunter has no shortage of energy or musical tricks up his sleeve and in fact it was just a few short months ago we reviewed his 'Aura' CD; an exciting progressive pop immersed in the sounds of Mike + The Mechanics and Alan Parsons Project. Hunter's new disc 'Ascension' and the first released on his burgeoning ProgAge label features a full colour fold-out booklet including lyrics adorned with suitably cosmic illustrations and is the final installment in the three-part trilogy that began with 2011's 'The Pathway of Light'.

The Songs
Tim's philosophical new age world view and love for adventurous 80's pop is still very much in play and includes several compositions written for the previous two releases making 'Ascension' his most consistent and musically satisfying effort to date. All systems go and lift-off on the title track with stars aligned to the late Gerry Rafferty's 'Sleepwalking' album and like that 1982 classic; Hunter weaves a spacey, atmospheric sound filled with beautiful melodies and hopeful message in both the heartfelt 'Year Of Change' and the upbeat 'Let's Step Through The Gateway Of Reality'. Very appealing, chakra centered prog although as bad as the title 'Galactic Discotheque' sounds, it's Alan Parsons Project circa 'Eve' all the way and rises to the occasion as one of the disc's many highpoints not forgetting 'Heathen Believers' with its air of Native American esoterism. Finally, 'The Right Wavelength' had it been recorded three decades ago would have been all over the radio, going head to head with the likes of Alan Parsons and Planet P Project and while I'm usually not a big fan of the instrument, kudos to Rob Corner and his snazzy and always tasteful saxophone which is featured prominently on this track and throughout the disc adding colourful flourishes to Hunter's already vibrant musical palette.

In Summary
Where will he go from here? Hopefully the same general direction, exploring a long-gone magical era when progressive rock and pop merged together and all was right with the world, musically at least. While unencumbered by categories or musical trends, Tim at this point seems to have little interest in prog metal or post-prog melancholy which is just fine by me. More please!
