I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

Melodine - 2003 Out Of Your Hands

Evan Frankfort - vocals
Joel Martin - guitars
Mike Farrell - keyboards
Eric Dziembowski - bass
Luke Adams - drums

Evan Frankfort has something of a Midas touch when it comes to his production work with up and coming bands around the LA area, and he's brought that same mark of quality to his own band Melodine. Quite simply, 'Out of Your Hands' is one of the best -- if not the best modern rock albums of 2003. The band's previous self-released album, 'Appreciation' was superb, but this follow up on Atenzia Records is even better.

The Songs
Opener 'Exit Wounds' typifies exactly what Melodine are all about - an intensely contemporary and cool vibe married to an interesting sonic landscape as well as plenty of melody are the ingredients which separate the band from a lot of nu-breed bands out there at the moment. Although that trademark Melodine sound is evident on each of the album's 14 tracks, the diversity of songs is astonishing. The up-tempo 'Heaven's Coming To California' has shades of The Cars to it, the cleverly written and arranged 'The Le Tingo' has a distinctly Latin feel, and the dark and brooding closing track 'Chew Your Life' wouldn't sound out of place on a Radiohead record. Other standouts include 'Slow Dive', which was originally written for Santana, the unexpectedly aggressive yet melodic 'Rope' and the quirky 'She's Only Human'. Five tracks have been re-worked from the original versions heard on 'Appreciation', but such is Frankfort's studio wizardry, each song has had new life breathed into it. The high-profile assistance of Wallflowers Greg Richling and Rami Jaffee enriches the scathing 'Nothing New' while 'Petered Out' sounds even more powerful than ever: 'I gave you someone you could trust/You gave me bad vibes and disgust'.

In Summary
With each new release, Atenzia has raised the bar in terms of its modern rock bands, and with an inventive, diverse blend of melodic modern rock, Melodine's 'Out of Your Hands' is the label's best release yet.

I think they messed about with this album too much prior to its release. Although good, the tracks on 'Appreciation' offer more.

It's a draw between the two albums, but easily the best band on Atenzia.

I absolutely love this band and this particular album is probably in my Top 5 melodic rock albums of all time. Brilliant from front to back...

Even better than Jim Jidhed, Eric???

Not played this 'Melodine' CD for a few years, must give it a revisit this week.

That Jim Jidhed album 'Full Circle' was a bit of a corker, i must admit. I have the pre-production demos for that album too, kindly sent to me by "I cant remember.." lol! Melodine, Attraction 65, plus 101 South's 'Roll Of The Dice' are also worthy nominations for Atenzia's best.
