Background
Long considered one of the great AOR albums of the 90's, I guess that mantle is easy considering that decade was a bit of a write-off for most things melodic. However at the start of 1990, things were still going along plain sailing in our favourite sub-genre, and it was in Los Angeles that the formative process for Unruly Child began. The World Trade pairing of Bruce Gowdy and Guy Allison were introduced to recently departed Signal vocalist Mark Free, who was singing vocals on some demo material. The trio spent most of 1991 preparing song which eventually caught the ear of then Interscope Records exec and producer Beau Hill. With a contract in the offing, Unruly Child released their critical debut in 1992, which despite the onslaught of the grunge movement soon bearing down on the music industry like a black raincloud, this CD has stood the test of time quite well.

The Songs
Combining all the best elements of their previous roles in other bands, Unruly Child at first listen is not your typical AOR experience. Gowdy and Allison hold the keys and retain the melodic progressive traces from their time in bands such as Lodgic (Allison) and World Trade. Songs such as opener 'On The Rise', the essential pairing of 'Who Cries Now' and 'When Love Is Gone' really puts this album up in the highest echelon for its time. On other tracks, 'Take Me Down Nasty' is a rousing rocker with lyrics straight from the 80's strip, 'Criminal' is a brash sounding workout, while the part-ballads 'To Be Your Everything' and the lush 'Is It Over' deliver the sort of melody that has made this band a favourite of many over subsequent years. Let's not forget the pairing of 'Lay Down Your Arms' and 'Wind Me Up' which bring back reminders of The Storm album (also on Interscope) released the previous year.

In Summary
A great album, but the band did not survive the aforementioned grunge movement, nor the departure of mentor Beau Hill who had a huge falling out with Interscope Records, despite being one of the founders of the label back in 1990. It essentially left the band with next to no support. The band went into hiatus, returning six years later though with Free no longer in the lineup, replaced by Kelly Hansen (Hurricane and Foreigner). However, in recent times, popularity for the band has increased significantly, with all original members reuniting for 2010's fantastic album 'Worlds Collide'.
