Escape Music's latest Swedish offering is the band Lover Under Cover. Formed by Mikael Carlsson, he has roped in numerous familiar players to flesh out the project. 'Set The Night On Fire' may appeal to those of you familiar with some of lead singer Mikael Erlandsson's former projects like Last Autumns Dream or Salute. Not that Lover Under Cover is all about him. Producer Martin Kronlund is very familiar to the Escape roster of acts, while drummer Johnsson is a member of Coldspell. Some say Erlandsson's vocals are getting better. I would disagree and say that they've gotten raspier! Perhaps a few smooth honey-laced whiskeys might fix it! lol! A great (typical AOR) title in 'Set The Night On Fire' does set the scene somewhat, including that stylish 80's imagery of the undercover lover in shadowy doorways, and once we're in, you'll find a mix of songs that are a trademark of the Escape melodic rock acts in recent years.

The Songs
Musically this has got some great things going for it. Some hard riffing numbers that appeal mostly, I just have to temper my opinion around those raspy vocals. The band get right down to it with the fiery 'My Best Friend', Erlandsson leading the way in no uncertain terms. You'll get no disagreement from me about tracks such as 'Angels Will Cry', or the rumbling 'Too Good Be True'. 'Hero' features Katarina Häger performing the female part in true Queensryche fashion (re: Pamela Moore), though musically this is closer to European melodic rock/metal. After the slow start, a few whacks of the whip on the horse's rump sees 'Flash In The Light' tear off down the back straight with double-bass drums propelling the thing along at a good clip. The title track 'Set The Night On Fire' moves at mid-tempo speed, the organ parts in the middle are a great tribute to the likes of the late great Jon Lord and Ken Hensley, so good on Carlsson for that. Picking up the metronome once more, 'Who Needs Love' is fairly straight-forward in style, European feel for sure! Some interesting synth parts announce 'Crazy For You', delivered in anthem style the LUC team are obviously having a bit of fun with this one. 'Through The Storm' has an epic British sound, think 'Crusader' era Saxon, perhaps Saracen, Magnum or Ten. Possibly the album's change-up moment. The closing 'A Nice Day' is the album's shortest moment, a ballad which didn't do a lot for me unfortunately.

In Summary
'Set The Night On Fire' has some very playable tracks, but when compared out across the entire album, the overall summary reads great without being overly excellent. The musical performances are fine, the production is great too, but perhaps the quality of all the songs needed to be a notch higher. Still, a good effort from Carlsson (considering this is his project), and no doubt we'll be hearing from him in future. And if like me you have an opinion about Erlandsson's vocals, don't let that put you off what is a promising band who are on the rise.

Although I haven't been impressed with Escape's output in recent years, this sounds interesting.
