Background
A Swedish band that's been floating around the hard rock soundscape for a few months, it's time to take a look and listen to Nubian Rose. With a name like that, it's easy to look for a female reference, and we get one with focal point and lead singer Sofia Lilja, the obvious hottie in the band, with a scorching voice to match the hot looks. If you're Swedish, you'll already know she is the vocal coach from the TV show 'Swedish Idol', screening on Sweden's TV4. Nubian Rose aren't just a great looking gal with a support cast. Oh no this is a fully cohesive band that are stuck like a temporal time traveller in the late great 80's. You'll find your favourite 80's hard rockers mixed in among the grooves of this retro-rocking CD. The ┼kerlund family influence is all over this CD. The brothers Christer and Ferderik provide the six string and ivory melodies, while Christer's wife Sofia burns up the vocal chords. So let's get cracking and see what this lot have to offer.

The Songs
These Swedish melodic monsters kick it off with the stomping 'Ever See Your Face', with Sofia demanding whether or not she's going to see my face. Umm yeah, ok.. Things take the overdrive to another level with the absolute pumping 'Mountain', one of the best tracks here, and it would appear the band are already somewhere near the summit! 'Living For Tomorrow' is a futuristic anthem for our times delivered with power and intent. Sofia tenderises the next tune: the soaring ballad 'How Am I', complete with orchestration. 'Get Ready' returns Nubian Rose to their bread and butter hard rock style with steaming vocals and storming guitars. A great combination. 'Your Love' by contrast has a near pop vibe though the band do push through the barrier somewhat, particularly on the solo section. My other favourite tune here is the mighty 'Once Bitten', a rollicking number for sure. 'Reckless' which follows soon after is great too! Check out the excellent video accompanying this track. I love the 'woah woahs' from Sofia. Oh yeah! The only cover song on the CD is the Ozzy meets Lita ballad 'Close My Eyes Forever'. To my way of thinking it wasn't a great song to start with so it doesn't matter what anyone does with it beyond the original. Still, Sofia and Mats Leven give it a go. 'Sisters' might be feminine in name but its fairly butch (not bitch eh?) in sound. If Jimi Jamison was singing this then it could very well be Cobra in disguise.

In Summary
Released back in April 2012, it has seen a release on the small Swedish label Rambo Music, plus a Japanese edition on Rubicon (with a different CD cover). Not bad for what is conceivably an indie issue. Music By Mail has also acquired this for their new MBM Import Service, so you can find it there too. Let's hope that this band can kick on as they have a lot to offer. Are we also looking at a new queen of melodic rock with Sofia? Keep that one under your hat!
