Big Picture were a suburban Chicago based five-piece who's music has often been categorized as 'neo prog' which both then and now seems to be catch-all for anything progressive with commercial appeal. Keyboardist Mark Pieper was involved with a Genesis cover band prior to Big Picture, but this disc bares little if any resemblance to them or Marillion and has more commonality with North American mid-80s styled FM rock, significantly - Rush.

The Songs
Opener 'Shine On' reveals the Rush influence from the get-go and we're not talking 'Farewell To Kings' or 'Hemispheres' here but 'Hold Your Fire' and 'Presto' without a doubt. OK, maybe there's a few subtle Tony Banks styled keyboard runs on this tune and 'Power Of Life' but I also detect 'Big Generator' Yes on the atmospheric 'Choices' and a whole lot of Roger Hodgson in vocalist Scott Pieper on just about every track. Still, it's Rush that looms large on 'That's Just the Way It Is' which is stuffed with radio friendly hooks and the most progressive track of the set 'Cold World'.

In Summary
Nicely presented with a fold-out booklet that includes lyrics; this is not the most original CD you'll hear and surely not worth the ridiculously high prices recently seen on eBay. Big Picture never followed-up with another disc although Mark Pieper is still active musically, playing in a variety of bands in the Chicagoland area.
