When I first heard of this Finnish duo, I immediately noticed an increase on the excito-meter. Compared to one of my fave bands Reckless Love, and also Swedish AORsters Elevener, could it be that we had found a ready-made 2012 replacement for our missing friends from Finland in Brother Firetribe, Free Spirit and Firenote? The answer oh GD faithful is an unfortunate no.. But I don't mean no as in 'no good'. Sunset Boulevard is a privately released affair, you won't see this in the shops (not that any of you go to a CD shop anymore.. go on, admit it!). So, on that basis, this is a very admirable affair from Messrs Vornanen and Sainio as a private collection of unreleased songs, well done chaps.

The Songs
Upon first impression, the songs sound pretty good, and you wonder how good they would be given a full production budget offered up by a label. There's some good guitar and keyboard interplay, and the whole thing has been angled at that sound/style popularised by those aforementioned Finnish bands. It's a good and natural template admittedly, and it's been proven to work. There's a high dosage of AOR, a twinge of west-coast, and a dash of modern rock. It all makes for a very listenable affair. From the opening high-rolling AOR of 'Hungry Hearts' to the trippy mid-west rock of 'Been Alone Before (a la John Taglieri), or even the 80's radio rocker 'Heartbreaker' which is hugely appealing. It's probably a bit racier than the previously mentioned Elevener, and certainly not as west coast/mid west as our Italian friends Fab Box, who incidentally announced that they are going back into the studio!

In Summary
All the songs hover in that four minute bracket, and you really can't do anything but support musicians who are offering up music like this on their own bat. So good on Juha and Simo for that. I wish more musos would do likewise, because it makes the whole melodic rock and AOR sub-genres that much more interesting. It wouldn't be fair to compare this to full-on studio releases but what I will do is invite people to bring Sunset Boulevard close to their chest and give them support in much the same way that people have done with Swedish band Taste and their recent signing to AOR Heaven.

Though this was made available in 2011, it has really only come to light during 2012, hence my reference to 2012 in the article. Also, I have not given this article a rating, due to its private/self released status.. akin to a series of demos.. if you know what I mean..
