RATING:

Background
Back in 2009, I reviewed the unreleased Roq Royale album. An album that Atlantic gave the kiss of death back in the day, RR subsequently folding after being spurned. I won't go into too much detail about it - you can read about it on that article page (see below). Nice to see three years later that it gets an official CD reissue from AOR Heaven as part of their AOR Classix series. Good one Georg! From here, I can now make an assessment of the material on both versions. There are variations with the songs for sure, some of the new versions are shorter, some longer, which means that there were probably several editions of songs hanging about.

The Songs
The new CD has twelve tracks onboard, including three that weren't part of my original unreleased set. 'Tempted' is the Squeeze cover that I mentioned in my previous review and for me, it's a wasteful tune that shouldn't really be on this album to be honest. 'Under The Boulevard Lights' is a cover of the minor 1980 hit from Chuck Francour. This version is OK but Chuck's original is the winner for mine. 'Someone Is Waiting' is a six minute workout that starts out slow and deliberate but by the halfway stage it opens out onto the freeway with exhausts at full burn. Of the other tracks which were in my earlier review; 'Too Young To Die', 'If I Were King' and 'Walk Away' have had their track times extended.

In Summary
From my perspective, there's not a lot that needs to be said or written that hasn't already been covered on our 2009 article for this album. Glad to see that one mystery has been solved, one rarity is now officially in the public domain, and that the whole Roq Royale saga can now be laid to rest.
