Man, has it really been nine years since the first Coastland Ride disc? A little charmer that was; a poppy blend of AOR and west coast that while not entirely original, provided a much-needed dose of adrenalin in what was definitely a low-yield year for melodic rock. What took so long to follow-up with 'On Top Of The World' is not exactly revealed in the Avenue of Allies promo and better late than never I suppose although I do wonder how far back these recordings were made and cobbled together as it really doesn't sound like a 2011 production. I could be wrong and a good sign this isn't just another collection of odds 'n sods, the Swedish threesome are apparently working on a third disc while promising to deliver new recordings in a more timely manner next time around.

The Songs
Sadly in a year that was rife with musical treasures 'On Top Of The World' falls short as one of its better offerings although it's all systems go on opener 'Act Of Faith' which surges with melodic intensity and it's easy to get caught up in the band's addictive pop rock especially on the Hall & Oates inspired title track and the Player, 80s Chicago merger 'Second Chance'. Street Talk/Lionville guitarist Sven Larsson drops in on several cuts, including the percolating pop of 'Made Up My Mind' but my hands-down favourite tune is the Huey Lewis & The News influenced 'Sandra'. A veritable hook-fest of the highest order, more of this on their next album and I'll be one happy reviewer. Unfortunately I'm not so thrilled with the sets second half which takes on a less interesting harder-edge, 'Save You From Yourself' in particular. The rawked-up vocals from the usually pleasant Markus Nordenberg don't work for me nor am I impressed with the spoken word bits on the just-plain-weird 'Jericho Falls' and the rather un-melodic throwaway closer 'Nail Me To The Cross'. If this is Coastland Ride's new direction, count me out.

In Summary
Avenue of Allies have reissued the band's debut with bonus tracks in tandem with On Top Of The World'. Nice move and the first is the one to get while I'll forgo a recommendation on the above in light of so many other top-notch AOR releases currently making the rounds. Proceed with caution.

I actually quite like this one. Some nice tunes, which tempt me to give a 8.5/10.
