Background
This lot passed me by back in 1988, truly ensnared among the hair metal troupe at the time, but with traces of glam, sleaze and trad rock found within their grooves like loose lipstick on a painted lady! Cato and Lewis first met in Toronto during 1979, but formed SG in New York City. The band did release a ST album back in 1985 on the UK based Heavy Metal America label, before Elektra came courting, and thus began a whole heap of problems for this rowdy lot of AC/DC styled interlopers. Fronted by the charismatic Sally Cato, who sounds like a more rabid version of Teresa Straley, the band were the East Coast brunette equivalent of L.A's blonde bombers Poison, though with a far edgier and rawer delivery. Stacked with sexual innuendo, SG's songs were rebel rousing to a tee, and were typical of that late 80's brash n bash style.

The Songs
Our first encounter with SG is through the provocative 'Lick It Into Shape', with bruising riffs and enlightened lyrics. Umm yeah.. '17 Goin' On Crazy' has a great barroom boogie vibe complete with honky-tonk piano. 'Play Dirty' is an enjoyable romp with a chorus that sounds vaguely familiar, though I can't quite place it. 'Dive In The Dark' and 'Hard To Swallow both power along like a dildo on full speed, the tracks themselves are full of innuendo, no surprises there. Changing tack, 'Eye Of The Storm' is SG's first ballad, meandering along with acoustic guitar and Sally Cato's heartfelt vocal, this one comes to life at the halfway mark, powering along to the finish. Mid-tempo and slightly mellowed, 'Legs Up' is the tale of a woman who's not on the path to redemption, it's followed by one of the best tracks on the album 'Eye For An Eye', a boogie romp with a catchy set of verses and chorus. Heavying things up for 'Cast Of Nasties', the band throw out the metronome and pick up the tempo for a crash/bang finish. 'Sermonette' completes this ten track set, an anthem rousing number guaranteed to get the sweat dripping and hair flying.

In Summary
At the time of its release, SG did not have the support of record label Elektra behind them. Gigs were hard to come by, and when an opportunity to tour Iron Maiden was scuttled by the label, the band walked out of its contract, effectively finishing up their tenure there and then. The band continued on but without Roger Lane (who had left SG to join The Throb), they recorded a set of demos (which can be found on the Internet somewhere), were teed up to re-sign with Atco Records and with Mick Ronson at the helm, but upon his tragic death, that deal fell through. A band that set the NY rock scene alight in the late 80's, their reward nearly 25 years later is a flash CD reissue by Rock Candy Records.

A rousing set of street glam metal with the added flair of raspy female vocalist Sally Cato. The cut 'Cast Of Nasties' is a thundering romp.
