Background
What an entrance this band made in 2009. 'Time Elevation' was as close to Def Leppard inspired greatness as one could get. And with The Lepps currently cruising Australia and making a guest appearance at the Western Australian Channel 7 Telethon this weekend, I can't help but tear my interest away from Perth and zoom back to Sweden where Grand Design are all set to release their second effort 'Idolizer'. Much like a well baked cake, if the recipe ain't bust, there's no need to change it, as is the case here for this album. If you loved 'Time Elevation', then I doubt I'll be changing your mind anytime soon.

The Songs
Let's not muck about and 'Get On With The Action', as the opening title says. Complete with humongous drums and a prowling guitar line, it's the tranverse between verses and chorus where Grand Design strike it big, and this track is no different. 'Change Me Up' is an intense affair with many of the latterday Lepp features in evidence. The cleverly titled 'Oughtograuph' is another guitar prowler, slightly more upbeat in tempo, an energetic track all round, no ballad tendencies here that much is clear! Instead, that is saved for the next track 'Your Love's A Runaway', a power ballad in the grandest Swedish tradition, but probably the award for best ballad comes with 'Addiction For Love' which is a sweeping affair with the obligatory wall to wall vocal harmonies. But I think I much prefer it when the band overload the electrics and go hell for leather. As evidenced by the OTT 'Let's Rawk The Nite' which is my fave on the album. Are Grand Design in a time warp? Judging by 'Rock Back To The 80s', I would think so, and it surely goes to show which decade has had a profound impact on these Swedes. Chugging out with a full tank of gas, 'You're Gonna Dig On It' is as serenading as the Argentinean Los Pumas rugby's team scrum bearing down on you, and that's highly relevant considering we're right in the middle of the Rugby World Cup at the moment.

In Summary
As mentioned, the recipe is much the same, the delivery as good if not better than the original. I'm not quite sure the collection of songs are on an equal footing as those found on 'Time Elevation' though. I say that not in any demeaning way, because to be fair, the songs on that debut were exceptional, so it would be a hard task to match those. Once I give 'Idolizer' a fair amount of time on my playlist, I'm sure the results might change. Don't let my comments stop you though. Well worthy of a play, a listen, and hopefully a few bucks out of your wallet. Grand listening for sure!

Agreed, gorgeous cover and a great disc! Totally Def Leppard style, but hey, if they can't do it anymore!?!?

Sorry guys, have to disagree. Awful singer and forgettable songs while "Addiction For Love" is a total "Love Bites"-ripoff... and not even a good one. No, not for me.
