More appropriately, Laurie Beechman and her band The Sighs. Released in 1980, Laurie had generated a bit of interest among the Atlantic Records executives, who were more than impressed with her vocal skills, and looking for a counterfoil to Chrysalis Records big signing Pat Benatar. They had seen her in a Broadway theater production of 'Annie', whereby she displayed her versatility in that show and her big voice won her widespread attention and a contract with the label. Her debut album, a rock-and-roll album simply called Laurie and the Sighs, came out in late 1979, and featured the above band lineup. Laurie at this stage of her career wanted to make a go of it as a singer, though her first love was always the stage and Broadway.

The Songs
The album was critically received, and saw Laurie move in a direction similar to the likes of Pat Benatar, Amanda Blue and the gals from Toronto. The approach was quite guitar oriented, but the overwhelming power of Laurie's vocals made damn sure just who's record this was. On the opener 'Midnight Love' for instance (a DL Byron co-write), she belts out with no restraint. Hear her also on firebrand tracks such as 'Burning Up' and the awesome Pat Benatar fury of 'Runaway'. The guitars crunch up on 'Never Go Back', while the rampant pop of 'Party Lights' and the swagger of 'Touch Me' make for a great listen.

In Summary
In another tragic case of 'pass the resignation letter', Atlantic Records saw fit to play musical chairs in their hierarchy, and as a result, cut off corporate support (as Laurie described it), when new Management was bought in. This made it difficult to maintain a band while on tour. Gutted with the end result, Laurie returned to New York, and immersed herself back into Theater work, whereby she made a huge name for herself on Broadway, with performances in 'Joseph', 'Cats' and many other shows over many years. On a sadder note, Laurie is no longer with us, having passed away on March 8, 1998 of ovarian cancer at the relatively young age of 43. A severe vocal and musical talent, and gifted stage performer. Sadly, another to join the GLORY-DAZE roll of honor.

Despite lack of finacial support from the label, Laurie & The Sighs did manage some dates with Rush on the East coast.

Even though I own the vinyl, just found this on a blog as a download. Still rocks!

'Touch Me' was also covered by Love Affair on their Radio Records debut in the same year.

Laurie definitely had some pipes on this hard edged AOR album. She really belts out 'Touch Me' and 'Face to Face'. You can hear her theatrical roots come through on the slower paced 'Your Bridge Is Burning'. She even gets into some spiky power pop rock on 'Runaway' and 'Stop Telling Me No'.

'Touch Me' was originally recorded by Fancy and appeared on their debut album. It was a US top 20 hit single to boot.

As I write a new sealed copy (which it is, even if AYM lists it as 'used' ) of the WB reissue is up for sale on Amazon UK for... £ 1.63 Grin

In for a penny, in for a pound (or in this case 1.63)...just ordered a copy.

Laurie And The Sighs oddly released a non LP single in 1980 with two unreleased tunes, a Roy Orbison cover on A side and an original tune 'Sympathy' on the flip side. To add confusion the artwork of this UK/German only seven inch reminds of the LP artwork even if it is not featured on it! Also a mystery and a disappointment why the WB CD reissue did not feature this two tracks as a bonus, since they were originally on Atlantic too... Angry

Rostoned, I'm thinking that Terry (@WB ) didn't even know about those additional tracks. Come to think of it, many of WBs' releases have never included bonus material. They've just taken the original album, and run with it.
