Background
Back in 2008 we had a listen to Malta based rockers Fire, and were highly impressed by what we heard. Found on MySpace, and subsequently snapped up by Gregor Klee over at Avenue Of Allies, their brand of hard-edged melodic rock sat very nicely for many of us. Well, in 2010 they've gone forward yet again but in doing so they have dragged their past into the future. By that, I mean that this CD 'Ignite' features material that was only released locally on the island back in 2006, but some recorded earlier than that. I think it's a good idea to put more material from this band out there, but in doing so, AoA label boss Gregor Klee has expanded the original release with a couple of additional tracks. To me, they are close to the territory occupied by Swiss heroes Gotthard, and with their recent and tragic loss of Steve Lee, it seems timely that we talk about this Maltese outfit in the same breath.

The Songs
Fire attracts your attention immediately with the brazen melodic rocker 'Get Out Of My Way', big riffs, a hammond organ backdrop and some suitably inspired lyrics.. 'Get out, get out of my way, I'm gonna getcha like hurricane... 'Make Believe' and 'Manhunter' both originate from 2004, and are pretty reasonable songs all up. But it's a track like 'Fire Flyer' which says to me this band have immense promise. It's rollicking hard rock with souped up guitar riffs and a singalong chorus. Fire introduce a bit of Aerosmith's flavour on 'Taste This (Rock N Roll)', there's also a hint of southern rock in the mix too. Power ballads seems like something this outfit could do in their sleep, if 'Goin' Down' is anything to go by. Delivering a change-up moment, 'Away For Good' has a slightly different feel, while 'Home And Dry' takes on a modern rock persona. To turn the books yet again, Fire present a five and half minute mini-epic called 'Conspiracy Theory'. A combination of prog, and pomp based fantasy rock will have some of siting up taking notice. The middle section has a keyboard solo straight out of the Bluebeard camp. What the hell? Surprising us once more, Fire deliver a take on the Bryan Adams chestnut 'Run To You', a good version too, a bit organic and rockier than the original but good to hear a different version. The second bonus track is the 2007 Christmas number 'Miss You This Christmas', a mostly acoustic rendition, and one to sing around the tree this December.

In Summary
Personally, I think this is one of the better bands doing the rounds in Europe at the moment. Their high-octane brand of rock is well suited to the live/arena environment, and I would love to see them get an opportunity to play a few select gigs on the mainland. They can easily mix up commercial sounding tunes with some razor sharp hard rock. Back in 2007 they did manage to get over to the UK to play a few gigs, but I would like to see them do more. If there are any booking agents out there, check this band out, and add them to your lineup.
