I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

Background
Formed in Adelaide in 1976, Scandal sounded very British and very much like Queen, who as it happens didn't do well in Australia early on having been booed off stage at the Sunbury Festival in '74. The irony is Scandal didn't find favor with the hometown crowd either, with four singles pulled from the album and only a cover tune charting, the band split up in late 1978. Reformed and reconfigured in 1979 with Wendy and the Rockets guitarist Adrian Dessent, they didn't last the year, although the band's only album remains a progressive pop classic.

The Songs
Not an entirely original sound and to be fair there are other influences at play here including 10cc and Supertramp, but primarily me thinks this is an album crafted after too much boozy wee hours listening to 'A Night At The Opera'. Of course I have zero problems with this, especially when musically Scandal hit all the right spots. Opener 'Matador Song' is nothing short of frantic pomp and reminds me quite a lot of Trillion's debut when all is said and done while 'My Lady's Chamber' uses a mighty fine Freddie Mercury falsetto blended with very proggy instrumentation provided by future Venetians guitarist Peter Watson, but it's their OK cover of the Ace classic 'How Long' that won them a spot, albeit briefly, in Australian hearts. Strange the label chose this as the third single, with 'Best Deal In Town' and 'Harry' getting first crack at non-charting failures. 'She's A Lady' pulled as a 45 late in the game is superb classically driven mid-tempo pomp dripping with pseudo Queen inspired vocals and I've found a little piece of heaven at thirty three and a third.

In Summary
Like so much of Australia's AOR/ pop heritage, Scandal and the early Mushroom catalog remains unavailable in sparkling digital although there was a rash of reissues in the early '90s. Scandal was not included which should come as no surprise, but the album shows up on eBay every once in a while and where I recently picked up a pristine copy for a nice price. Buy with confidence.
