If you wind the clock back to late 2008, we got confirmation that AOR-FM Records were going to reissue material from Dutch band Vangouw. Unfortunately, Bruce put the label on hold, and has been inactive ever since. However, this did not stop band leader Gerard Vangouw in his tracks. Instead, he has opted to release most of the past material himself, and bundle it together under an album header called 'Passion Rules'. The songs were originally recorded between 1988 and 1991 during a series of five different sessions, and some with top notch Dutch producers too! Many of you will be aware of low quality demos doing the rounds on the Blogspot sphere, plus there are Ebay traders who are hawking off bootleg CD's for extortionate prices. These should be superceded by the official CD that have now been given the full reissue and remastered treatment along with a heap of photos of the band back in the hair-metal 80's.

The Songs
Kicking off with 'And Your Love', the gentle acoustic introduction makes for a bombastic form of AOR, the chorus is very memorable, topped by some wonderful keyboards and guitar lines. Taking the subdued approach, 'Leave The Night Behind' has traces of 'Race' era Pseudo Echo, with a fantastic solo that even Brian Canham would admire. For something different, Vangouw spruce up for a cover of the Fleetwood Mac chestnut 'Go Your Own Way', sounding nothing like the original, with big guitars and keyboards enough to scare Stevie Nicks into a dark corner. More acoustic guitar and layered synths precede the big power ballad 'When You Think Of Me', a classy number guaranteed to weaken any AORster at the knees! Pascal Groenen provides the funky bass lines on 'New Horizon', and along with the gated drum sound, this one lives in the 80's for sure! 'Simonai' is another true 80's contender, with Mr Mister like keyboard work, but with an overall bombastic pomp approach comparable to some of Vangouw's other Dutch brethren from that era. With a title like 'Make Up In The Morning', you'd be forgiven for thinking this might be a teary-eyed ballad, but no.. rest assured. There is 1st Avenue and Javan styled pomp of the first order! Again, big keyboards and slice/dice guitarwork. One of my favourite tracks is the rather racy workout that is 'In The Night'. Again, the reference point for me would be outfits such as the aforementioned Javan, possibly also Rescue. The song gallops at a frantic pace.. 'Not The One I Love' is a harder rockin' effort, more in keeping with the styles of Zinatra or Glory. So too 'Come My Way', with its heavier guitar sound. The last track on the album is a live cut.. 'Lasting Love' recorded live in Amsterdam back in the day, is a mid-paced affair bordering on the point of being a singalong ballad. The echoey sound of this song doesn't help in terms of the audio quality, but you get an idea as to how good these guys were, the vocal harmonies are top notch.

In Summary
Great to finally hear these tracks under the one album. Admittedly, the audio quality on some of the tracks are less than pristine, but they are much much better than all those dodgy old fileshares of demos which were transferred from x-th generation tape cassettes. 'Passion Rules' has been released on Demo-licious Records, and then Amazon, 'Passion Rules' will have a short shelf life, as only 500 copies are being made available for sale. Get in quick! Kudos to Gerard for allowing GLORY-DAZE the opportunity to listen to and review the album. Highlights: 'And Your Love', 'Leave The Night Behind', 'Make Up In The Morning', 'In The Night'.

Please note: the audio samples provided in the above DivShare link are 96kbps quality. I downgraded them to keep the filesizes small.
