I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

Reynold Philipsek or Reynold as he liked to call himself in the mid-80's, hailed from St Cloud, Minnesota; a sleepy mid-sized university town in the central part of the state over looking the Mississippi River. Having lived in St. Cloud around the same period, I can safely say Reynold can count himself lucky, breaking out of what was then one of the most boring towns on the planet. With that said, I'm somewhat puzzled popping over to the musicians web site and finding his two AOR albums 'Black And Blue' and 1986's 'It's High Time' have been wiped from his discography. Clearly Reynold has moved on and is now a highly respected jazz guitarist with numerous releases to his credit, but is this just a marketing move or is he that embarrassed by the quality and output from this period?

The Songs
Whatever his motives, 'Black And Blue' is a fine album and nothing should be kept in the dark, so let's shed some light on a record that should be better known amongst collectors. Album opener 'Love Springs Eternal' has a nice Eddie Schwartz feel, with piano taking the lead role while the perky 'Bad Attitude', I'm Not Like That' and the Henry Lee Summer sounding 'My Big Plans' are typical period pop rock that will have you yearning for the good old days. Side one's brooding instrumental's 'Blues for L.G.' and Child's Play' shine a light on the classical and jazz direction Reynold would move into later in his career and on the flip 'I Witness' and the fluid and upbeat instrumental title track are reminiscent of Chris Rea at his very best, but for me the most interesting and tantalizing cut on this choice LP is 'St Cloud Sleep Waltz'. A voiceless carnival-esque tune that apparently, according to the back of the LP has something to do with a film made in Reynold's hometown - 'St Cloud Sleep'. Not sure if it was part of the soundtrack, but it's a delight, very French and caps off the album beautifully.

In Summary
Released on the little known Minneapolis based Rephi Records, 'Black and Blue' while not as immediate, holds up rather well against other Minnesota AOR bands of the day including Chameleon, Fairchild, Zenner, Livingston Fury and most definitely Patriot.

I wonder if this is worth buying. I have his 1989 release on cassette tape and to be honest it's not very good let alone has anything to do with AOR.
