Last year, Italy graced us with the excellent new band Markonee. It was well received around the regular melodic rock haunts on the Net. However, this years surprise packet could be Skill In Veins, based around the talent of Varese based guitarist Andrea Lanza, but there is a connection to Markonee, as you'll soon find out. The Italian youngster had written a lot of material and required a top-notch producer to professionally record his songs. Enter Alessandro Del Vecchio, recently featured at GDAZE as one of the leading lights on the brilliant new Shining Line CD. Del Vecchio could sense Lanza's potential, so set about putting the building blocks together, with a set of musicians being added to bring Skill In Veins to life. In came Del Vecchio's cohort from Edge Of Forever Nik Mazzaucconi on bass, U.D.O drummer Francesco Jovino plus Markonee vocalist Gabriele Gozzi. The overall Skill In Veins sound is a very earthy one. Think back to the late 80's and early 90's when bands like Little Caesar, Badlands, Skid Row, 9.0 and Cold Sweat were in operation. Lanza's guitar tone is rough and ready, taking his cue from guys like Paul Gilbert (Mr Big era), Slash, Jake E Lee, Richie Kotzen and Gus G). The other stand out is vocalist Gozzi, who really does provide some mean vocal power!

The Songs
This dual pairing, along with a heavy as horses rhythm section combine to turn Skill In Veins into a powerhouse quartet, with some of the rowdiest hard rock to be heard this year. Certainly when you hear tracks like 'Can't Ride My Soul' and 'Youth Times', the youthful expression is there for all to see and hear. On the other hand, 'Sick Mind' takes the crown as the heaviest track here, a slugfest that punches out aggression along with expletive laden lyrics. For the best part this could be metal with a degree of decadence. Lanza and Gozzi dabble in cowpoke rock/metal a la GnR, Aerosmith on 'I'm Living My Life' and 'Just One Drink', the former sees Lanza pulling off a Slash like guitar-solo, while the latter features some sleazy slide guitar work. 'Don't Need You To Cry' comes as a bit of lite relief after all the blitz and bluster, a restrained intro and first verse before things take off again on the chorus. The accelerator pedal is floored once more for the busy 'The Way Out' and the prowling groove of 'We Don't Cry'. The last track 'We Don't Believe In Fables' takes us out on the back of a near 8 minute excursion, a gritty rocker with an equally gritty attitude.. the band taking no back steps and putting up with no bullshit..

In Summary
Skill In Veins as an album won't send you into sugary inducements of ecstasy. No, it's too far toward the end of the hard rock/metal spectrum to have any effect. Though there is some potential and promise here, it's still very early on in the piece, let's hold the phone for maybe another album, and another years songwriting under the belt. If you're a fan of guitar based hard rock with a little bit of raw power and a rough/ready attitude, then Skill In Veins may very well be up your alley.
