Background
Swedish guitarist Sven Larsson has been regularly featured at GLORY-DAZE. His work has been featured with bands such as Street Talk and Xinema, both wonderful bands and popular with our readers too. He also spent three albums worth of time with the band Galleon, but Larsson, a world class guitarist by anyone's standard is now featured on his first solo album. 'Sunlight And Shadow' is an apt title for a guy who can kill the listener with devastatingly melodic and haunting guitar lines, or superfast licks that defy the speed barrier. Without doubt, he's one of my fave guitarists, and he proves that he can deliver on voice and instrument. Fans of Tim Pierce, Steve Lukather and Michael Thompson and other such session gods will enjoy this..

The Songs
The title track 'Sunlight And Shadow' is quite a spirited opener, you'll be reminded of his material with Street Talk, whereas 'Eagle' touches a slight progressive strain, similar to his prog band Xinema. 'This Is Not The Right Time' rumbles gently along as if propelled by L.A session musos, though this is not the case. 'Daydreamer' has all the hallmarks of a 70's flavoured rocker, sort of like Steely Dan doing AOR! 'Fly On By' takes us for a walk down some dusty midwest trail, and it's followed by the fluid instrumental 'Tube', with some staggering lead work around the half way mark. Toto fans should pick up on the track 'Bastard', there's also a little bit of The Police in there too. 'It's Over' is probably the track that touches the West Coast genre the most, while 'I'll Turn My Back' and 'The Neighbour' feature Thomas Eriksson on vocals and things get red hot and revving, both tracks moving Larsson into harder rockin' territory. The finale is another instrumental. 'Candy' is a rock/fusion affair, which features time changes, hot/cold moments, ebb/flow.. a real musicians workout.

In Summary
Well, I'm pretty impressed, but when it comes to Sven Larsson, that's easy for me to say. A greet variety among the tracks, which takes in all the musical reference points that has bought Larsson to where he is today. It's a musicians album. Guitarists who like listening to Beck, Johnson, Morse, Lukather etc should latch onto this, and discover this extreme six string talent who resides in Sweden's north. Put it this way, if Sven was living in L.A, he'd be a superstar by now!

Sweet Westcoast/AOR stuff ala Street Talk (Fredrik Bergh plays keys on here) Toto and maybe a dash of Steely Dan thrown into the pot. Quite eclectic stylewise from the opening AOR of 'Sunlight And Shadow' and the excellent 'Eagle' to the more diverse instrumentals in 'Tube' and 'Candy', more upbeat rockers 'I'll Turn My Back' and sweet ballads like 'It's Over'. Sven is a very tasty little player aswell, with some lovely subtle solo's throughout and along with a lovely crisp production job, this makes a very nice little disc indeed
