Well it had to happen at some stage. And that is: 21st century glam rock making its way into the beer ravaged environs of Newcastle Australia. Famous for its coal, Rugby league team 'The Knights', a certain former winner of the Miss Universe pageant (Jennifer Hawkins), plus of course that other notable Novocastrian band The Screaming Jets, Newcastle would hardly be the place for grown men to dress strangely and present themselves differently than the brawny Ockers who frequent the local bars on Friday and Saturday. Unless you are Hansel! Formed back in 2006, the quartet issued a 4-track EP two years later entitled 'Mission To Rock'. Despite the glam image, there's a small dose of keyboard going on in the background, so if you like your glam slightly south of Steevi Jaimz wildly west of Wigwam with a bit of L.A hair sleaze thrown in a la Poison and Guns N Roses, then Hansel might just tickle your radar.

The Songs
The big-shot track on the album is 'Murder 101'. This track appeared on their 2008 EP, plus the boyz have a video for it as well. Hansel deliver professional sounding rockers such as the commercial (dare I say it.. near AOR) fare of 'Eruption', the deadly sounding 'Rock City' plus the desperation of 'On the Run'. 'Vampire' is a sassy rocker that tosses out furious solos as much as Rupert Murdoch does insults. Hansel do throw the curve ball on occasion. Check out the ballad of 'Between A Rock And A Hard Place', which moves in a GnR direction, and the acoustic singalong blues of 'The Whole Nine Yards.

In Summary
Hansel quite clearly dispel the notion that there's more to Australian rock n roll than AC/DC, who are all the rage down under at the moment with their current nationwide tour. With newish bands such as Hansel, Airbourne, Koritni and White Widdow, there is hope yet from the land Down Under that a new legacy is being written. Just as I write that, I find out from the Hansel website that lead singer Jett Jones is moving on, they had a farewell gig for him last weekend. 'Never Say Die' as an indie album is great little rocker with a big attitude. I hope we hear more from this outfit, and may they strike a deal soon and get back into the studio.

Very good release by Hansel, but it most probably was their last one. Which is a pity.

Err no, Hansel are back in the groove. They have a new EP out called 'Fluorescent Blue Light'. The band gig occasionally, but their personnel are scattered all over the Sydney and Newcastle areas of NSW. Check out their Facebook page..
