The spelling might be different, but the sound and music is right-down-the-center-lane AOR - just as we remember it. He might be known on this CD as Tony Liddle, but others will remember him as Tony Liddell, the first voice on the debut Strangeways LP from 1985. Tony has been involved with various projects over the years but it's his mostly overlooked and under publicised solo career that gets the wraps on this album 'Hearts Desire'. After he departed Strangeways, Liddle moved to Europe to record 'Hearts Desire' album, which has a very hi-tech/Euro feel to it. Interestingly, Target Records have reissued this album in 2009 and labelled it a 10th Anniversary Sepcial Limited Edition, and slapped on an additional 5 tracks as bonuses, to the original 9 on the first issue. The strange thing being, the original was released around 1988, so that would make it a 21st Anniversary rather than 10. So what actually happened back in 1999 then? Musically, Liddle takes this album in the direction of Heartland, Drive She Said and Canadians Body Electric. There's a lot of drum machines going on which detracts from the overall sound, but there are a couple of tracks which are kinda cool, though the production is pretty messy to be honest, and I'm not really a fan of Liddle's vocal style, truth be told.

The Songs
The material on 'Hearts Desire' is made up from several sessions. One song was written in Germany during 1986, produced by Dominoe's Robert Papst - the track being 'Need Your Love'. Also that year, two tracks were written in Switzerland, being 'Wasteland' and the title track 'Hearts Desire'. 3 songs have been written with Ernie Gold (Preview) and Phil Naro and performed by the Gold Brothers/Preview. These are 'Hot For You', 'Can't Stop Loving You' and 'You're All I Need'. These were recorded in 1987. However, the 3 best tracks in my opinion are the trio of 'Stranger To Love', 'No Easy Way' and 'Out In The Sun'. These three were written and recorded in London during 1988, and feature Steve Lamb on guitar, the tracks produced by the pairing of Paul Curtis and Chris Arnold. These three are superb songs - the best on the album by far, but the rest of the material falls away markedly, due to poor production (or poor mixing) and a general lack of quality therein. Of the bonus tracks, the production isn't the best either, the quality come across as demos mostly. The first two 'Got To Let Her Go' and 'Rebel' are very hamfisted, and are sourced from (reputedly) Liddle's 1986 album 'Unnatural' (which I've never seen nor heard for that matter). 'When The Feeling Lies' is a live take, and is pretty rough sounding, while the last two 'Guilty' and 'Ungrateful' are ballads taken from Liddle's 1994 album 'Strange Street' (another album missing in action), which are probably the best of the bunch.

In Summary
Beyond the timeframe of this album's initial release back in 1987/1988, Liddle moved to New York, and worked in the industry for many years. There were suggestions that Tony was going to take on the lead vocal role for E.L.O Part II due to Jim Steinman's involvement, and also Foreigner as a replacement for Lou Gramm, but neither opportunity worked out. Liddle was involved with the horrific Tygers Of Pan Tang 2001 reunion 'Mystical', which was released and eventually offloaded by Z Records. Tony has his own recording studio Strange Street, but it appears his website - which was active a few days ago has now been hijacked or replaced?? Not sure why this album was singled out for special treatment by Target Records.. sure, it has a couple of good tracks, but as mentioned, the production and those drum machines just kills it for me.
