Background
Back in the 80's and even into the 90's, Sweden was still producing heaps of talented AOR bands. Many never made it to the top rung, instead flooding the AOR Undergraound (as it was then) with high quality demos. Many of these you see surfacing now as fileshare downloads. Into the current day, unsigned bands are now using the medium of MySpace to achieve similar goals, except nowadays we don't have to worry about 100 generation cassette tapes of their demos. The delivery method couldn't be easier, though there is a downside.. and that is knowing how to stand out head and shoulders above the crowd. For AOR fans you needn't worry, as the sub-genre isn't in the healthiest of shape, so for any half-decent band, like Sweden's Turbulence for instance, they already have a headstart. The band have recently sent us a copy of their rather tasty EP from last year called 'Walk Through Fire'. You can hear some of these on their MySpace page, but having the full set of six is a much better proposition.

The Songs
Yes it's AOR, but Turbulence provide a full-bodied work that blends all the instruments rather than for one to dominate. Fans of modern AOR in the vein of Place Vendome will find this an easy fit. Let's not forget the impact that Scandi heavyweights such as H.E.A.T and Brother Firetribe have had on recent bands such as Turbulence, Eye, Dynazty, which augurs well for a sub-genre that is admittedly - really under the pump. All of the six songs contained here have their own special qualities. 'Alive' gives a good account of the band, the guitar and keyboard interplay is very noticeable. 'Another Chance' picks up the tempo initially, and surges forward on a rich mixture of synth layers, energetic guitars and a boisterous vocal. This is probably my pick on the EP. 'Illusion' has a huge chorus with mega harmony vocals, a good track but I'm just struggling to pin a comparison on it. 'Falling' is more of a nod in the direction of fellow Swedes H.E.A.T, the vocal is delivered with a deeper tone, though the verses are quite sparse the whole thing is supremely melodic. 'On The Run' comfortably cosies up alongside Place Vendome with ease, it definitely has a sound that Dennis Ward could've weaved his magic over. The final track 'Walk Through Fire' is another to feature a muscular chorus after rebounding off luke-warm verses - which probably needed to be stronger to compliment the song.

In Summary
'Walk Through Fire' is an encouraging for this Swedish quintet. I feel the balance between verses and choruses is not quite right yet, as I mentioned on the title track, but some of the other songs had those same traits too. It's not a major, but the kinks are usually ironed out with attention to detail through the song-writing process and then rehearsals. Hopefully Turbulence can continue writing some good material, and with the odd tweak here and there, they could really have some quality stuff on their hands in the future. In the meantime, 'Walk Through Fire' is as good as any place to start.
