I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

A while back we had a look/listen to Norwegian band C.C.C.P. They were a one-off project featuring Casino Steel, Carlene Carter, Claudia Scott and John Payne. That album 'Let's Spend The Night Together' from 1986, wasn't a particularly memorable affair - a covers album mostly best left in the past. It was something that the quartet didn't hold vital, so left it at just one record. Casino Steel and Claudia Scott however, continued to write together. Prior to C.C.C.P both had been part of a trio called Claudia - Big Hand - Casino, which also featured noted Norwegian country rocker Ottar 'Big Hand' Johansen, but by 1986, both had opted out of that band for a fresh start elsewhere. Continuing on into the late 80's, Scott and Steel, who were by now a couple, kept with the 'rock n roll' scene, even though it was rare territory for them (Scott has a longstanding country background whereas Steel came from a punk rock/blues background). The material on 1988's 'Scott And Steel' is a mixture of these two environs. When I first listened to the record, I thought it was terrible. I've since gone back and given it a better and more lengthier listen, and it's not as bad as I first thought. You just have to be in the right zone.. obviously I wasn't the first time around.

The Songs
S&S take on an earthier sound, sort of mid-west/countrified rock, the vocals are split between the duo; Claudia coming off like Juice Newton meeting Stealin' Horses down at the local diner, whereas Casino's vocal led tracks move in a revved up country rock direction. Some songs work well in the rock context, while others are equally at home in bluegrass territory. The rockier songs include 'Do You Believe In Love', the crank-it-up-sass of 'This Ain't America', 'Walk Aside' and 'Oldsmobile'. There are a number of softer ballads too, 'Where Did You Go', 'Hearts On Fire', 'Ballad Of The Sad Cafe' and the (sort of) power ballad 'Blue For The New Generation' all fall into this category. If (like me) you are a fan of Emmylou Harris's sultry moments, then this might appeal. I quite liked the interestingly titled 'Alison Likes Girls', which sounds very much like Australian pop from the mid 80's a la Mental As Anything.

In Summary
After the release of the album, Claudia and Casino headed for the bright lights of Los Angeles, did some work over there, but eventually broke up. Claudia returned to Norway in 1992, Casino released an album in 1990 over there, but he too eventually returned to London. Both are still involved with music today, and both have had colourful careers in their time. So there you go, spend some time with this album, you may get some mileage out of this.. probably more so than me..
