Background
Without doubt, we need to look at a few more Bad Company albums on this site. We'll eventually cover a bit of ground from their early days right into the current day. The mid 80's is a period that isn't typical BC material, particularly when Paul Rodgers isn't part of the equation. However for many kids growing up in the hair metal era of the mid/late 80's, this is the version of Bad Company that they know best. Early efforts like 'Straight Shooter' and 'Burning Sky' are remnants from another decade. 1986's 'Fame And Fortune' introduced Brian Howe to BC fans, in the process converting the band into Foreigner clones. Though that album seemed to fly past the tower with not so much of a mention from the air traffic controllers, 'Dangerous Age' literally flew into the tower window, undercarriage and all. Sales were up, though the recipe and delivery method had changed from 'Fame And Fortune'. Producer Keith Olsen had introduced keyboards on FAF whereas Terry Thomas decided to cut back the ivories for 'Dangerous Age', keeping it more of a guitar rockin' album, though he did provide some keys and guitars to flesh out the sound. The subtle changes obviously worked, as the album did reasonably well.

The Songs
Many of the songs contained the same blueprint for success. If you listen to a cross-section of songs such as 'Shake It Up', 'Dirty Boy' or the rather excellent 'Excited', they all sound somewhat similar. Brian Howe and Johnny Edwards both sing in the same style, making the latter's hook-up with Foreigner for 1991's 'Unusual Heat' a near doppleganger compared to FAF and this album. The most popular song off this album was 'No Smoke Without Fire' which spent a bit of time on the charts. Elsewhere, BC dip their spatulas into a commercial Def Leppard come AC/DC brew, with songs such as 'Rock Of America', 'One Night' and the title track 'Dangerous Age' all sounding like a hybrid of different ingredients. The ballad 'Something About You' offers something a little different, a soaring mellow piece with very clean melodies.

In Summary
The same team delivered even more for 1990's 'Holy Water', which turned 1991 into a very successful year for the band, with hit singles all over the place, plus a huge co-headliners tour on the road with Damn Yankees. I wonder what Ted Nugent thought of it all.. with his ex singer Brian Howe now on equal footing. The band would release one more studio album with Howe, 1993's 'Nothing But Trouble'.. and after that, we saw the demise of the Mark II version of Bad Company. Mark III would start up again in 1995 but that's another story..

I remember interviewing Steven Tyler and Joe Perry at WEA's old offices in Soho just after 'Permanent Vacation' was released. Brian Howe was also in the building and popped by to say hello and a record company PR obviously introduced him as being in Bad Company. An unknowing Steven Tyler asked Brian to send his best wishes to Paul Rodgers.....doh!

Great album that I was fortunate to get shortly after it came out. I didn't hear any of these songs on radio, but this one paved the way for "Holy Water" and the hits from it. I copied this to a cassette and played it to death on my many road trips between northen Virginia and east Tennessee in 1989, so it holds a prominent place in my memory. I think the four Howe-era BC albums are all darn good!
