Background
Thomas Vikstrom belongs to a select group of Swedish rock vocalists. Revered for his epic performances on that debut Talk Of The Town record back in 1988, he has flitted between other projects including his own solo material, Brazen Abbot CD's, Therion, plus his interesting tenure with Swedish doom metallers Candlemass. Thankfully he has returned to a position that is more in keeping with his talents, a melodic hard rock band, demonstrating his ability to deliver clear, clean and powerful vocals. Hooking up with a bunch of other Swedish musicians, Covered Call has been onboard since 2006. Their musical theme is interesting. The cover, image and album title maybe a veiled attempt at describing the current financial climate. The Image in particular is a throwback to The Tubes 'The Completion Backward Principle' era, where Fee and the boys all dressed up in corporate attire. The same goes for Thomas and his bandmates, though somehow they don't look as smooth as The Tubes did back in 1981. Not quite sure what was the inspiration for the Japanese themed Anime artwork,, I'm sure there is a reason. The other major plus factor with this album is that Fredrik Nordstrom - master engineer to the likes of Pagans Mind and Dimmu Borgir was behind the desk for 'Money Never Sleeps', so you are guaranteed that there is no compromise spared for quality.

The Songs
Covered Call are playing in a straight-ahead guitar rocking style, with very little (if any) in the way of keyboards. Their sound is dynamic, and carried heavily by the melodic throat of Vikstrom. The rest of the music fits in nicely from behind. Highlights include the excellent hard driving but melodic 'What About Us', the extended balladry of 'Anything You Want', highlighting just how good Vikstrom sounds with the right material, plus the tough sounding opening pair of 'All Because Of Me' and 'Til The End'. It doesn't stop there though. You can't go wrong with the commercial hard rock of 'Shine' (with its memorable chorus) nor the tempered aggression of the title track and the brilliant 'Nothing At All'.

In Summary
Classy Swedish melodic rock has always been around since the 80's, and though Covered Call touch on it, they sound quite comfortable in 2009 without being bogged down by the attachment to a past era. To be honest though, Thomas Vikstrom's vocal credentials lift this band beyond the norm. I wonder then what they would sound like if another singer was involved? I guess I won't have to worry about a response to that. In the meantime, head on over to their MySpace page, have a listen to their material and check them out. 2009 is starting to crank up in terms of quality. Add Covered Call to that list.
