With a name like Cherry Lips, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to ascertain that this band are full of good looking girls. Either that, or a bunch of Cherry pickers from down south with nothing better to do with their free time! This (excuse the pun) 'bunch' of gals come at us all the way from Verona Italy. The only point of difference for the band is that lead singer Stefania Parks has British origins and speaks native English, which will obviously add appeal to the bands fortunes elsewhere around the globe. So what of this band? When they are nice, they can be compared to The Bangles and The Gogos. When they want to be nasty (oo err.. there's a thought!), spinning out comparisons to Girlschool and The Runaways wouldn't be out of order. Having come to fruition (gosh the fruit analogies are dripping everywhere aren't they? lol) in 2004, the band have been picked up by Swedmetal Records, and again produced by Crashdiet's Martin Sweet.

The Songs
Musically, the band are a bit loose around the fringes, which adds to their charm. Sometimes the raw and ready approach is much better than the pristine production of a souped up studio. In saying that though, some of these songs come out sounding real good. The guitar work from Elisa really gives Cherry Lips ample playful energy, which the vampish Stefi does well to exploit. The heaviest track here is the tastefully titled 'Mean Hot And Nasty', and the girls do just that - musically speaking! The commercial fare of 'On My Own' is appealing, as is the rough-edged 'Back For More', with it's hint of AC/DC in the mix. For me one of the best tracks is the easy on the ear 'Heartbreaker'. The sound mix for this one is very good. For a bit of 80's legacy, the girls cover Cyndi Lauper's 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' for a laugh. Actually, it's a pretty good version, in a stripped down sort of way.

In Summary
The album is officially released in a few days (March 27th) so you should be able to pick this up from all the usual online retailer suspects. If you have a hankering for 70's glam and girl power 'rock n roll', then you could do no worse than having a gander at these rock babes and listening to their stylish sound. Ordinarily, Cherry Lips style is not the sort of music I would normally listen to, but I had a ball of fun listening to this.

George- The- J- only the BEST of the 80's please?musicThumbs Up I was on the Cherry Lips MySpace page and I really like this. I enjoyed the Go-Go's post the IRS debut- although Cherry Lips are not quite The Runaways either (yet).

Definitely a band to watch.
