I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

A staple in the West Coast scene is singer/songwriter Robbie Dupree (real surname Dupuis), an artist who's history goes way back into time. Originally from New York, Robbie spent the formative part of the 70's developing his own style, based on a R&B theme, but with a commercial bent ideal for radio at the time. Having lived and played in the arenas of Greenwich Village and Woodstock NY, Robbie packed his bags and moved out west to Los Angeles, hooking up with friends Rick Chudacoff and Peter Bunetta, and being managed by Al Bunetta. After picking up a contract with Elektra Records in 1980, Robbie Dupree literally landed on his feet as a solo artist with this his debut album.

The Songs
Overall the album has the same feel of contemporary West Coast oriented artists of the day, as per the recommended list below. The album spawned two huge hits from 1980, the lead off 'Steal Away' and the classic radio anthem 'Hot Rod Hearts'. For it's time, these were great 'summertimes' tunes, ideal for FM radio. 'I'm No Stranger' has heaps of Boz Scaggs similarities running through it, while the following track 'Thin Line' floats into Michael McDonald's backyard looking for a place to land. 'Love Is A Mystery' is a nice breezy piece, as is the epic 'Lonely Runner', perhaps next to the two hit singles, is the best track on the album, and one of his more AOR efforts. Elsewhere, the remainder of the tracks are rather lightweight.. 'It's A Feeling and 'We Both Tried' are good examples of that lighter style.

In Summary
As a consequence, Robbie received a Grammy nomination for Best New Year Artist of 1981, the award finally going to Scottish pop singer Sheena Easton. A follow-up record for Elektra - 1981's 'Street Corner Heroes' (a recollection of his time growing up in Brooklyn, NYC) generated another Top 40 hit 'Brooklyn Girls'. Dupree and Elektra however, parted company in 1982, and it took a few more years for Robbie to get back into the music scene properly. As an album, 'Robbie Dupree' is still a popular record among the West Coast fraternity, and it is now available on CD through the Robbie Dupree website (below) after being out of print for many years. Still performing regularly, I'm sure we'll still see Robbie's cruisy style of music being played somewhere around the world. And of course 'Steal Away' and 'Hot Rod Hearts' will no doubt be heard countless times on radio.
