Over the years, we've thrown the virtual pen at a few of Robbie Dupree's albums. The first two albums in particular are reviewed and listed below. Despite a hiatus away from album releases during the late 80's, Dupree has remained in the business, and released the occasional album. 'Time And Tide' is his 2008 effort, the first album in five years, and it seems to have created a bit of a resurgence in Dupree's career. It's well overdue and highly deserving too! The CD has achieved a worldwide release, being carried by different distribution channels, including Swedish label Zink Music in the European markets. Zink have carried quite a few West Coast releases during 2008, but I think 'Time And Tide' might be the pick of them, just for that pure West Coast sound. Certainly the reviews have been excellent, so we've jumped on the bandwagon too, just to see what all the excitement is about.

The Songs
If you've followed Dupree's career from day one then you'll be aware that not much has changed stylistically for the man from Woodstock. His songs breathe life, the production is a blend of earthy organics and lush warmth, without being suffocating and drenched in studio overdubs. For openers, 'Wrapped Around Your Finger' could well become another Dupree anthem in the years to come. The lyrics and vibe of the song has a bit of an Peter Mayer infusion.. so PM fans will no doubt be interested. 'Mystery World' is played at half pace, meandering along in a Gino Vanelli fashion. A return to the smooth tendrils of West Coast is the very cruisy 'Lucky', whereas 'Sugar Tree' manages to combine west coast, jazz and fusion into a palatable dish that a guy like Jimmy Webb was dishing out previously. The harmonica cameo spots adds that previously talked about 'organic' flavour to the recipe. The Vanelli reference rears its head on 'Blue Tuesday'.. that urban jazz/fusion/west coast mix so familiar. Winding the clock back a decade or three is the funky 70's vibe of 'Secret Love', it's followed by the dramatic poetry of 'Knocking On The Gates Of Eden', something that Bill Champlin or Bill Meyers would feel comfortable doing. 'Satisfied' from its earthy roots has a tendency to rock out, but it's the closer 'Judgement Day' which sells the album. At a touch over 5 minutes, the lyrics and laid back structure makes this the album highlight. The emotive piano and guitar work provide the soul of the song, complimented by Dupree's storyline vocals.

In Summary
'Time And Tide' has been out for awhile now (released back in April by Zink), but like many albums in the market, some of these we get to later than usual, but we do eventually get there. Dupree's backing band over the last few years are represented on the album. Larry Hoppen from GDAZE faves Orleans is the guitarist, former E-Street Band keyboardist David Sancious tickles the keys while Dupree's two longtime compadres Peter Bunetta and Rick Chudacoff lock down the rhythm section. Good to see Robbie back, and for those with a predeliction for pure West Coast and that crossover jazz/fusion sound, then the buck stops here.
