Best Of 2007 - 2007 Gdazegod
A summary of 2007 from gdazegod.

Albums Of The Year

Well if Andrew over at can be late in delivering his 2007 picks, so can we. Belatedly, here we go. Albums selected are in no particular order, just ten of the best.

Melee - Devils And Angels
Really enjoyed this slab of fresh and fruity modern pop. Songs like 'Rhythm Of The Rain', 'Can't Hold On' and 'Built To Last' delivered melodic goodies like an over-enthusiastic Maitre D in a classy restuarant. Superb.

Pathosray - Pathosray
Simply OTT progressive power metal from Italy that stole bits of Dream Theater and wrapped cast iron shielding around it. An excellent singer in Marco Sandron. Look forward to future material from this impressive band.

Pride Of Lions - Roaring Of Dreams
I love these guys. AOR/West Coast.. and the voice of Toby Hitchcock gets me every time. Even if these guys scribbled lyrics on toilet paper I'd still be interested in their musical output.

CC Rock - EP
Fantastic Swedish pop/glam/AOR. Did I mention that the band gets top points for putting 'glory daze' in their lyrics of 'Wanna Feel Like The First Time'? Haha.. go to the top of the class boyz!

Burn - Global Warning
Not as AOR as their earlier 90's albums, but classy nonetheless. Heavy, but with a ton of melody. Good signs for the band as they are getting the CD sold in markets outside of traditional European and American markets during 2008.

Crossfire - Dirty Game
What's going on here? Is Glam and AOR on a comeback? Does Kelv Hellrazer have anything to do with this? Haha.. he should! Pretty good stuff coming out of Israel of all places! Very classy package, in amongst the tattoos, lipstick and nail polish!

Ancara - Beyond The Black
Pretty good Finnish band, similar to countrymen Leverage. I really enjoyed it, even if it was played in a lower register. Look forward to album number two!

Saga - 10,000 Days
Their best album in ages, and a fitting departure for stalwart Michael Sadler. I think many Saga fans on the GDAZE site (including Jez and NickC) would agree.. a great album by a longtime favaorite band.

Lec Zorn Project - It Began In The Undeground
I'm a bit of sucker for this style of AOR. It took absolutely ages to get it out into the marketplace. Even Boston and Def Leppard should feel threatened! Hopefully Steve McAtee won't take this long to get album #2 out. Isn't that right Steve? lol!

The Scorpions - Humanity Hour I
A real surprise this one! Even more so to find it in my top 10, but that it does. Their message of peace really did win me over. I love it when a band can go against the grain and make themselves relevant with a purposeful message. I hope 2008 can deliver more bands with this attitude. Well done to Klaus and the gang!

Honorable Mentions
Pagans Mind - Gods Equation
Armory - The Dawn Of Enlightenment
Blind Alley - Destination Destiny
Gotthard - Domino Effect
Krackerjack - Rock On!
The Ladder (UK) - Sacred
REO Speedwagon - Find Your Way Home
Nightwish - Dark Passion Play
Seven Tears - In Every Frozen Tear

Disappointments of 2007:

Loverboy - Just Getting Started
For me, it never even got off the start line. Not sure what saw in this, but to each his own I guess..

Union Mac - Lost In Translation
Yep, lost all right!

In Summary
Not a great year to be honest. Fortunately 2008 is looking much better with a string of good albums already out in the first half of the year. There are some interesting signs coming out of reaction to arena type bands and concert attendances to older bands. Am I reading too much into the tea leaves? In any case, 2007 has been and gone. Let's move on.

Nice to see some love for the Scorpions' Humanity Hour cd! It's hard for old bands to make a album these days without everybody thinking that it sucks.
