Background
Crystal are a long-serving band from the San Diego area whose history goes back to around 1982/83. I first found about these guys on the excellent and early incarnation of the mp3.com website (a site that has since gone downhill since 2000). Back then, the band were promoting their 'Collection' CD, which was released on the Rewind label. Their brand of AOR was a prefect example of what the indie scene was all about back in 1983. 'The One For You' EP surfaced in 1985, with further EP's released in 1989 and 1993. The 'Collection' CD was a selection of tracks cast back in time. For musical comparison, take the best bits of Hybrid Ice, White Sister and Urgent (USA) and wrap it up in a rich melodic package.. and this is what you'll get.. Not only those guys, but there are many reference points throughout. Have fun finding them all!

The Songs
If the songs on this EP are anything to go by, then this lot must've been a great live attraction back in the day. Oh, do I pine for the late great 80's? I sure do.. The lead off track 'All The Right Girls' is a buoyant track in the vein of Loverboy, Urgent and Honeymoon Suite. A great start! The piano intro to 'I'm A Dreamer' belies the tremendous AOR to follow. Staccato piano lines combined with the hard driving guitar riffs played over the top of an urgent delivery sees this song somewhere between 'Up' era Le Roux, and 'Cast The First Stone' era Urgent. 'Piece Of My Heart' has been heard on other AOR websites previously, the keyboard and guitar interplay is well balanced and compellingly good. The ballad 'Shadows Of The Night' is near perfect example of melodic, acoustic AOR, with a shimmering and grandiose quality comparable to Twenty Twenty and Prophet. Just when you think it couldn't get better, 'The One For You' leaves us with a sweet and sugary taste - a tasty desert which finishes off this 21 minute delight in excellent style.

In Summary
As mentioned earlier, the band released future material intermittently over the years. 'Crystal' came out in 1989 while their last effort 'Crystal 3' was released in 1993. The band gigged consistently for a good twelve years between 1983 and 1995. They split in 1995 and haven't been reactivated since that time, though all the members are still active in the local San Diego scene. The band haven't been forgotten about either, with a website and Myspace page both containing lots of information. Take a look around, and do yourself a favour and try and track down a copy of the 'Collections' CD which you should find is still available on the CDBaby site. Take it from me, Crystal are an excellent advert for glory-daze AOR.
