Background
Back in 1979 I attended a Christian college while sharing a Dorm with two roommates who loved Sweet Comfort Band and never missing an opportunity, the 'Breakin' the Ice' album was slapped on the turntable much to my dismay. Far removed from Journey and Queen who I was playing at a regular basis, it wasn't that SCB weren't a good band, to the contrary but so-called 'Jesus Rock', much like the early Petra albums was very bland stuff and really not my thing. I left college in late 1980 never expecting to hear Sweet Comfort Band or any CCM again, until a few years later and I ran across a used copy of 'Hearts Of Fire'. It was cheap and thinking to myself I was the ultimate glutton for punishment, but after one play I was completely gobsmacked. What the heck happened to these guys? No more funky R&B and lame pop, just solid well-written AOR and and nothing remotely close to their early releases.

The Songs
It's almost as if someone locked these guys in a room with Toto, Pablo Cruise and Ambrosia albums until they were reprogrammed. Produced by David Diggs, 'Isabel' is clearly influenced by Toto as is 'You Can Make It' almost to the point of plagiarism, but who cares? Its fabulous stuff and. 'They Just Go On' continues the west coast vibe similar to Air Supply, while 'Feel Like Singin' goes Pablo Cruise with a terrific horn section and slap bass. My only gripe is the last two songs 'Just Like Me' and 'You Need A Reason'. Both are ballads and it's so typical of CCM albums of the time that start out rockin' then close on a softer note, as if we had our fun, now it's time to get serious.

In Summary
The band would release two more excellent albums 'Cutting Edge' and 'Perfect Timing' before splitting up, Randy Thomas to Allies and Bryan Duncan to a successful solo career. Like White Heart's debut, 'Hearts of Fire' is an 'A' list Christian AOR album that deserves a spot in every collection.
