Anyone remember The Chessman Square? Probably not and neither do I, but they were by all accounts a popular 60's-early 70's Kansas City, Missouri band that featured one Gary Hodgden. Following the break-up of that band and in an effort to break out of the doldrums of the Kansas City music scene, Gary with band mate Mayo James McAllister moved to New York in 1974 to find fame and fortune and eventually meeting up with The Left Banke/Stories guru Michael Brown forming The Beckies and releasing just one album in their short career. Oh yeah, Gary Hodgden? He became Gary West of Shooting Star fame.

The Songs
This is a much underrated album and I have read more than one review of the record over the years and most of them have not been very kind in light of Michael Brown's previous work which is unfair in my opinion. There is definitely a move from the ornate Baroque pop influences that brought The Left Banke and first two Stories albums to life, but they didn't go away completely. 'River Bayou' with vocals from Hodgden, 'River Song' and On The Morning She Came' (both with vocalist Scott Trusty) are very similar to Stories at their best with Brown's haunting keyboard work and delicate near Beatles-like melodies. Shooting Star fans will find plenty to get excited about, especially on 'Right By My Side (Etude)', 'One Of These Days' and 'Run Jenny Run' which are much closer to AOR and the Midwest rock sound we all know and love.

In Summary
A classic power pop album that few heard, The Beckies split a short time after the record's release which is a shame but all things being relative, Hodgden's move back to Kansas City proved to be a wise choice and as they say.. 'the rest is history'.

Chesman Square also spawned soft rockers MISSOURI (2 LP's out on Panama and a CD collection recently) For completists there's talk of a Chesman collection on CD!

Enjoyed this one off album, which is full of catchy songs that have power pop, AOR and Beatles influenced melodies. The album jacket artwork is strikingly cool as well.
