Background
As the borders become increasingly blurred between pop/rock and new country, along comes another easy on the eye female artist intent on staking her claim amongst the Shania Twains, Martina McBrides and Faith Hills of the Nashville scene. For the uninitiated, Yvette is, as her website says, 'a former Fredericks of Hollywood model turned singer' now married to the album's co-producer Matthew Nelson. Of course Matt is one half of AOR/melodic rock duo Nelson and the husband and wife team certainly make a commendable stab at launching Yvette's musical career. 'All For The Sake Of Love' contains all the hallmarks of an increasingly common brand of country pop - airbrushed production combined with a formulaic mixed bag of ballads, mid tempo numbers and blatant pop rock with a few fiddles and slide guitars thrown in to please the hat-wearers. It follows what is by now, a fairly well marked path - the pretty face with the big voice. But to be fair, Yvette does have a unique set of pipes, sounding like a cross between Cher and Jo Dee Messina and whenever one of the Nelson twins is involved you know melodies will be top of the agenda.

The Songs
Opener 'Let It Be Love' certainly confirms that. It's catchy, instant pop rock which I'm sure could make a radio impression if given half a chance. Nelson devotees will be pleased to know that Matt makes an appearance on backing vocals on next track 'It Isn't Like Me At All' which is in the same vein as the opener. Even though Matt didn't write it, this song wouldn't have sounded out of place on Nelson's most recent masterpiece, 'Life'. Indeed a lot of the album shares an affinity with AOR and melodic rock, but that's not really surprising when you consider that such luminaries as Desmond Child, Victoria Shaw and Mark Spiro, (who have turned their hand to writing Nashville pop) all contribute songs. Yvette gives a stirring performance on 'Just Once More'- the only Nelson-brothers penned song on the record - while the other big ballad, 'I Saw Love' should also tug at the heartstrings. But it's the pop/rockers which stand out and the Gary Burr/Mark Spiro penned 'First You Cry' and 'Useless' are two more hook laden tunes. It's also good to see celebrated songwriter Matraca Berg making a writing appearance on closing track 'Cry On The Shoulder Of The Road' which finishes things off well, allowing Yvette's voice to shine.

In Summary
While I may prefer my new country with a little more depth and sincerity, (artists like Kim Richey and Mary-Chapin Carpenter), 'All For The Sake Of Love' is quite a good first effort from Yvette. A couple of the ten songs are fillers and it may slightly lack the broad crossover appeal of Shania Twain's 'Come On Over', but there's a lot here to like. However, in a saturated Nashville scene which has a tendency to place big-budget marketing over substance, the financial muscle of record companies rather than songs is what often makes or breaks a new country artist. It may take another album to do it, but to paraphrase one of her husband's hit songs, only time will tell whether or not Yvette achieves that musical success.
