Platitude - 2005 Silence Speaks

'Silence Speaks' is the third album for Swedish progressive metallers Platitude, and my goodness have these boys stepped up to the plate or what? And if the plate was strengthened steel, not only have this lot lifted the lid to pandoras box, but they've given it a bit of spit and shine along the way. As we wind down toward the end of 2005 and into 2006, who would've thought that the old adage.. 'leave the best til last' applies with Platitude. They've left us with one of the best melodic metal albums of the year, and an album I haven't been this excited about since Pagans Mind colossus 'Celestial Entrance'. Many of you will know my penchant for extreme melody, and this lot deliver in spades. Their two previous efforts (2003's 'Secrets Of Life' and 2004's Nine') were pretty good admittedly, but this new one will have people thinking twice about this very young Swedish band. Platitude have now signed to German label Metal Heaven, after previously spending time with Italian metal label Scarlet Records. They have also signed with Japanese label King Records, so that should see this album widely distributed during the late 2005 and early 2006 period. The band have a new drummer in 17yr old wunderkind Andreas Blobjer, who won the best young drummer competition in Sweden two years running! He has also hooked up with Richard Andersson of Space Odyssey fame, so we should be hearing a lot more about Andreas in the years ahead. The bands previous keyboardist Andreas Lindahl has moved on, replaced by Kristoffer von Wachenfeldt, who brings a subtle style to the band. Certainly, this new album is light years ahead of where they were, and has made this writer sit up and take some very serious notice indeed, because the songs are superb.

The Songs
No matter where I navigate throughout the album, I am left pushing repeat play more than once. My guess is that many hardened prog metallers will dismiss this band as being 'too fluffy'. Certainly, other Swedish acts such as Dragonland and Supreme Majesty fall into the same category, but you try calling this lot 'fluffy' to their faces!! Some of the guitarwork from Gustav Kollerstrom border on industrial variety heaviness. The riffing going on with tracks such as 'Falling Down' and 'Don't Be Afraid' stamp authority. No fluffy-haired poodles in sight. Keyboards soak up any sign of perceived fat, and tracks such as 'Empty Inside' and 'Tell The Truth' display the sinew of a band in its prime, keeping the sound lean and mean.

In Summary
A fantastic album, heavy, classy, supremely melodic, and songs that just itch at the brain. Tommy Hansen's production comes gift-wrapped as a weighty and sugar-coated treat that will keep all melodic-rockers of any persuasion happy. Certainly this reviewer is very happy and is only to keen to share the Platitude of Christmas with all our GLORY-DAZE readers. Very highly recommended.
