Background
Perhaps not quite reaching the same levels of irregularity as Boston, Jeff Cannata has released a few gems at periodic intervals.. just to alert us to the fact that he is alive and well, and that music is still an important part in his life. First we had Jasper Wrath from the deep recesses of the 70's. Then we had the AOR classic Arcangel from 1983, and now we have five years later, his first release under his own surname. Most of the guys who played on that Arcangel record return to help out on 'Images Of Forever'. This album is not as bombastic as 'Arcangel', but still has masses of appeal to the typical AOR fan. Jeff Cannata has taken a few pages of the Yes songbook a la '90125' and 'Big Generator' and rewritten them for himself. 'Images Of Forever' a hybrid of hi-tech AOR, pomp and modern prog tendencies which Cannata would further explore on later albums.

The Songs
If there was one word to describe 'Images Of Forever' that would be 'majestic'. Pomp rock fans would know what that term means in the context of this music. Listening to the opening strains of 'Fortune Teller' and 'Hand In Hand' emphasises Jeff's influence and style. The gorgeous 'Sailing Ships' best demonstrates Cannata's musical vision, this and 'Break Away' keeping it mid-paced and stuck in third gear. Unlike 'Middle Of The Night' which zeroes in with a load of guitar aggression. My guess is that 'Will The Sky Begin (To Fall)' will be one of the favorite tracks of listeners. A very melodic and entertaining tune - pure pompous AOR! Similarly with the minor dramatics of 'Long Distance' the keyboard laden title track plus the stop/start nature of the closing 'Together'.

In Summary
'Images Of Forever' received many positive reviews from the press at the time. It was compounded by its scarcity and difficulty to obtain, an issue that is still prevalent today, as the album draws a reasonable price in the second hand market. It is the sort of album that would look good on Rock Candy Records ever growing catalogue, and would certainly take the heat out of an over-inflated Ebay auction. Perhaps I can hook Jeff and the RC boys up for a virtual cup of tea and a biscuit?

This is Typical Cannata in the melodies/structure, so if you are a fan of his previous/latter day stuff (Arcangel etc) then this will definately hit home. 'Fortune Teller', 'Sailing Ships' & 'Hand In Hand' are excellent and the rest is pretty good aswell

Reissued on a digipak CD by AOR HEAVEN label out of Germany a couple of years ago with two bonus tracks. I prefer Arcangel but some songs on this album are very good too (see Hand in handm Sailing Ships).

Sorry but I have to side with Eric about post-Arcangel-Cannata.I only remember how he sings the word Fortune Teller on this one.Maybe if I had paid thousands of dollars for it instead of 1 cent I would have loved it.Anyway that was how this cookie crumbled for me.Always prepared to listen to whatever Jeff comes up with though just in case something will stick.
