I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

This album has been on my wants lists for years. Hi-tech AOR from Canadian songtress/actress Mary Lu Zahalan is the order of the day with her lovely AOR effort from 1990. Zahalan appeared on the small Canadian label Justin, which also featured fellow Canadians Seventh Son around about the same time. If female-fronted AOR is your kettle of fish, then look no further. Mary-Lu goes back further than this though, having released an album called 'Think Of Me' in 1982 on the small Sefel label. There were also a couple of 45' singles floating around at the time too. As a result, she picked up a Juno nomination for most promising female singer in Canada in 1983 (ironically the winner was Canadian hard rocker Lydia Taylor, with other nominees being Lee Aaron and Luba.. esteemed company indeed!)

The Songs
For her 1990 album, musically/vocally, Mary-Lu has a similar approach to music as respected Nashville CCM queen Amy Grant. In fact, the short sharp snappy pop arrangements throw more than a burleigh full of bait at Ms Grant's direction, whether by accident or on purpose. Whatever the case, the songs, as expected with an album full of heavy-hitters (Michael Landau, Matt Gerrard, Dave Tyson, Gerald O'Brien) are classy, and an AORsters drooling dream. Songs such as 'I Can't Forget About You', the deliciously smooth AOR of 'A Long Way From Loneliness' where the Amy Grant vocal inflection is oh so obvious, make for a compelling listen. Indeed, late night listening would be compulsory for the latter. The songs get punchy and dramatic, particularly on the pairing 'Soulstar' and the uptempo 'While We're Still Young', and this provides a great contrast.

In Summary
For Ebay hunters, don't expect this album to be an easy acquisition: because it isn't. For fans of eighties hi-tech AOR/pop, or if you are into artists such as Jaime Kyle, Broke N Blue, Witness or Sharon O'Neill. If none of that lot take your fancy but you're into Canadian rock, then you have no excuse really. Very nice album nonetheless.

'While We're Still Young' is pure AOR excellence and 'Fallen Angel' is a great song too! Those are my favorites here!

I saw a good article on Mary-Lu yesterday, and I just had to do some digging. In 2011 (may have been 2010), she became the first person in the world to complete a masters degree in the study on The Beatles, conducted through Liverpool Hope University in the UK.

There are many articles on the net about it, but I found one closer to home (Sydney Morning Herald), that wrote about it..

Mary Lu Zahalan Kennedy has been a Music Professor at Sheridan College, based in her hometown of Oakville Ontario, just south of Toronto.

She has two daughters (Kayla and Rachael), Rachael herself is now stretching out as a musician in her own right. I guess it's in the family and the genes!
