Cloudscape - 2005 Cloudscape

Michael Andersson - vocals, keyboards
Bjorn Eliasson - guitars, keyboards
Patrick Svard - guitars
Hans Persson - bass
Roger Landin - drums

Cloudscape originate from Southern Sweden. They have been around since 2001, and in another life, they were called Doctor Wierd. The band members in between times have also worked on other projects, most notably Patrick Svard and Roger Landin, who have both worked with fluffy AORsters Alyson Avenue, and hard rockers Second Heat. However, it is heavy progressive metal in the vein of bands like fellow Swedes Dragonland, The Ring and US heroes Symphony X that Cloudscape aspire to. And a damn fine job they do too!! There's a little bit of Pagans Mind in there too, but you'd really have to go a long way to top anything that those Norwegian Metal Masters produce! Production chores fall to the guys at Roasting House Studios, Anders 'Theo' Thenader better known for his work with Tommy Denander and Jim Jidhed gets to play the 'heavy' this time, alongside fellow engineer Pontus Lindmark.

The Songs
The band open with the churning excellence of 'As The Light Leads The Way' (sounds like a Dream Theater title!), though the lead guitar solo is supplied by Danish guitar wiz: Section A's Torben Enevoldsen. It's all-hands-on-deck with the next tune 'Under Fire'. Try putting the heat on this track! The dramatic sounds of battle precede 'In These Walls', and culminates in a movable feast that only prog-metal fans can appreciate. Maintaining the aural assault is 'Out Of The Shadows', the pace being picked up noticeably. One of my fave tracks is 'Everyday Is Up To You', the staggered guitar and drum parts slamming home hard, while Andersson's vocals ride the crest of this musical wave. Then we get the Symphony X like delivery of 'Dawn Of Fury', followed by the darker edge of 'Slave'. Andersson again rises to the occasion on 'Scream'. This guy can add his name to the list of fantastic vocalists coming out of the region.

In Summary
I'm not sure what is going on up in Sweden, but this fixation for producing quite complex pieces of music in a progressive metal style is so prevalent now. Each album I listen to is so well executed; it seems these bands are competing with each other to see who can produce the best! Now you can add the name Cloudscape to your wants list. According to their website, the band are now starting to work on material for a second album. Bring it on.. more of the same please!
