Paul Godfrey was a name well known throughout the South Bay Area of San Francisco during the 80's. Paul was involved with many different line-ups of his band all during the 80's. By the mid 80's however, his line-up had settled as a female fronted outfit, and were quite a popular around the Bay Area circuit. In 1988, Paul released a very rare 8 track EP which came out on the small Dolphin Records label. For pure AOR collectors, this is rare as hens teeth, though someone did sell a copy just recently on Ebay - so copies still exist. However, his second 'full length' album 'Magic Touch' which came out two years later is much better known among the AOR community - though still very hard to track down. For fans of female fronted AOR, it probably doesn't get better than this! Take your pick of all the 'dollie lolly' albums during the 80's (we're talking Delta, ZZYZX, Drama, Idle Tears, Scandal and all the rest..) and this 'Magic Touch' album would be the equal of any of them. Tall words indeed, but worth every penny when you hear it.

The Songs
Crossover male/female vocals tangle around the mike for the lead-off title track 'Magic Touch'. Things get better with the storming 'Only One' - cliches galore but it's done oh so well. One of my favourite tracks is 'Love Lies Deep', which is stirring AOR, with keys on red alert. In parts the keys remind you of BLVD's debut. 'Never Felt This Way Before' continues the glorious assault, its pumping bass lines and 80's keys a reminder of music from decades past. Moving more in a pop rock vein is 'Only Have Eyes For You' - somewhat like Scandal meets Drama. 'Too Many Lonely Nights' is another punchy 80's pop rock affair, while 'Tonight' has a familiar hook to it that I just can't place. When I do, I'll be sure to let you all know. Synths initially take all the attention on 'Can't Get My Mind Off You' before a catchy chorus and equally nifty guitar solo come in and share the spoils. My guess is that Paul handles the lead vocal on 'Wild Ones', a mid-paced efort not unlike Stan Meissner at his best. Final track 'Hold On' delivers yet again more of the same excellence heard earlier.

In Summary
Trying to find out anything about Paul's activity during the 80's timeframe is nigh on impossible. Hopefully he'll be reading this, and can help flesh out all the unknowns about his music, history and personnel. I notice that Robert Berry (from Hush, 3 and Alliance) was involved with some of the material here. Not surprising, as Robert is active in the South Bay area where he owns and manages a recording studio, as we found out with our interview with Joey Cimino - from San Jose rockers Lebocat and formerly of Bay Area club band The Tops. In the meantime, keep hovering around Ebay to see if 'Magic Touch' pops up for sale. For an indie CD, this is a definite 'keeper'.

This is one of my all-time favourite FF AOR albums. No desert-island disc package would be complete without it. Awesome throughout - it has no fillers. Highly recommended.

I did not know that there was an EP in 1988 - can anyone burn this?

Incidentely, Paul later worked with 'Cast Of Shadows' - anyone got this?

Yep, I have Cast Of Shadows. Not the EP though.
